Driving into work yesterday all of the sudden my truck starts running like crap. Didn't get very far but got it back home. Dug into the problem and found that I had lost compression on the #3 cylinder. Dug little further and found that a valve spring broke. This truck is an 03 with only 104k on it. Been perfect up until now. Just wondering if this is a common thing on the 3.0's or a freak accident. thanks.

springs!

I have replaced 3 springs in the last two month's, I take care of a few Rangers for a security company. The Ranger that keeps breaking the springs has 140000 miles on it' i guess its a time! The good thing is they have been easy fixes, no valve damage. Good luck!

Why?

opie, just as a matter of course i would just pull the heads anddo all the springs and get a valve job done, that baby is just getting broken in

Why would you take perfectly good valves to the grinder and grind away good metal off of both the valve and the seat? NEVER has made sinse to me.
Most folks have no clue what a "valve job" really is! Nowhere else in the world are valve jobs regularly done.. If the head has a burnt valve the proper thing to do is to replace that one valve and leave the rest of them alone!
