I recently changed my oil on Tuesday. I had Castrol GTX 5w-30 since February.
I put in GTX 5w-20 and now I get valve noise likes its dieseling on cold starts but noise disappears after driving. Never had this happen before. I just bought GTX 20w-50 today. Is it okay to put in the 20w-50 now just after changing the oil or wait a little while? Should I just continue to use 5w-30? Would the noise stop on cold starts? Do I have to change the filter too? Would it hurt the engine? Live down here in San Antonio. 96 Ranger 2.3 manual with approximately 150,xxx miles on it.

dont use 20w50. yes, when you change your oil, always change the filter. never add more oil when its already full!

Do not use 20w-50 in that engine. Ever. If you want to get rid of start-up noise, try a full synthetic (in the correct viscosity). Synthetic has much better cold flow properties than conventional oil. (it's less thick and flows better when cold)

I would stick with 5w-30 in that motor. DO NOT PUT THE 20w-50 IN IT!!!!

I would also check for the fram filter. hell, just go and do another oil change...and put on a motorcraft filter on it at the same time.
