So i replaced the heads on my '88 2.9L Ranger. got it all back togehter, tried to start it and noticed it was "popping" through the intake. So i went and adjust the valve lash as follows:
-find TDC cylender #1 (pulled spark plug stuck finger in hole and rotated the crack with a wrench till the air blow out then stopped), verify rotor is pointing to cylender 1
-lossened rockers adjuster bolts then tightend to .005 inch intake and exhaust
-moved on and repeated steps on cylinders 4,2,5,3 and then 6.

then i reassembled eveything, cranked it and same thing popping.
now i read the Chilton and it says to adjust till rocker is bearly touching spring then go 1.5 turns about 2mm. My thing is this if .005 inch is to tight and causes popping 1.5 turns/2mm is going to be way to tight. Unless Im confused somewhere.

Any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Its rainy up here in WA state and im getting tired riding my motorcycle already lol.

doubt if the valve lash is causing the popping as you discribed.

do you notice if it is over fueling??
guessing that popping is caused by a lean condition and or timing off a bit.

have you pulled the codes?

well, i just got it all back together and haven't been able to start it yet. it always seems to be a pain to get it started after you pull the distributor. i did verify that the distributor is in the correct position and the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder when its tdc. also changed the oil and put new plugs in it. so if i can ever get it started again ill see if it trips a code lol.

+1, I had a plenum leak (vacuum) because I had reused the gasket. Caused a similar issue with popping. Located it by spraying carb cleaner around where the upper and lower plenum meet (but could be elsewhere, you'd have to check all conections and anything that's vacuum related).

well now im having trouble getting it started since ive removed the distrbutor and the timing is off. is there an easy way to get it started again. right now im turned the distributor all the way back, turn the turn for a few cranks, doesnt start, stop turn the distributor a lil recrank. repeat this unitl i find the spot where it starts, but this time no I cant seem to find that spot where it will start at all. thanks for any help once again.

oh and yes the rotor is pointing to cylender 1 when at tdc on the compression strokes, and ive replaced the oil and spark plugs for what its worth.

IMO, get a timing light to get it as close to 10btdc as you can while someone else is cranking over the motor, then work your way from there.. This will verify how close or far you actually are, plus you'll have the benefit knowning that portion is in working order. You might consider pulling the fuel pump relay so that you're not dumping gas into the engine during this process.

still nothing...it cranks but no boom in the cylinders. I re verified Im getting spark and fuel, so im not sure. im getting really frustrated i dont know where to go from here now. and i really hate taking my stuff to the shop and getting anal rapped on the labor cost!! so i want to avoid that at all costs.
