We have many valves around our house, probably around 15 alltogether. Water/gas valves, but I can't seem to find a explination that tells me *why* you should exercise your valves? Can somone explain in detail this procedure?

So they don't get fat?

Do you mean like, cycle them between off and on a couple of times? If so I'd guess maybe so they don't seize up?

^ that would be my guess.

nothing worse then trying to stop a gas or water leak by shutting down a valve, just to have the handle break off....

I do this regularly and eat a high fibre diet to keep me moving...

Like Wicked said...if you don't use them, you loose them...and when some idiot turns them too tight one way or the other it's a PITA to try to work them back if you need to do it fast...

as long as your on city water and none of your valves are up side down, yearly or semi yearly should be good. Just close them all the way then open them back up, if they leak you might have to repack the packing in side the valve.

It's not a bad practice to work your water valves periodically. Most water systems have some minerals in them and deposits can build up over years, and when it comes time to have to close or open that valve, you might find it difficult.
