by chance, does any one know what size tap and die i need to use on the valve cover holes to pull my bolts out?

friends dad will give me one but only 1 size. says i cant take the kit home. and i dont wanna make multiple trips to town.

Please restate that a little better.

Tap and die are used to repair damaged threads, not free stuck bolts.

what engine?

I think the stems of most valve cover bolts are around 6 mm in diameter, so I'd go for the smallest one. Did you snap all of them?

only snapped 2 and there right next to each other. its 1993 ford explorer with 4.0.

sears has easy out drill kit for 5 bucks. but it only goes to 1/8 inch, and idk if thatll be small enough. might just have to drill em out and tap them.

i said tap earlyer because the dumbass at napa said i needed a die and tap to pull the bolts i said no. but ive only used them once.

if the shaft of the bolt is near the top surface of the head, load it down with PB Blaster and let it sit for a day or so.

then get a small chisel and gently tap the shaft of the bolt at the outside edge of it so that you are spinning it out counter clockwise. you might get lucky enough to get it out.

whatever you do, if you drill it out be very careful. if you break the drill bit off, you will be in all sorts of hurt...

Use a center punch and a 3/32 left hand dirll bit. Be sure to get the punch CENTERED before striking. Those little 6mm bolts break often, usually right under the head. As long as the bolt was not cross threaded, the left hand bit should take it right out.
