Vacuum Hose Help Please

Hello! I recently purchased a 96 Ranger 2.3L 2WD. I noticed a vacuum hose has been plugged off with a small wire nut and I have no idea where it goes or went can anyone maybe offer some assistance please. Also, I found this because I was having trouble with a chattering and more like a clacking noise under the hood which I'm pretty sure it is the valves. It only makes this noise under a load. For example any kind of slight grade that causes the engine to start to work harder the clattering starts and it is pretty loud. It does this in 5th gear and down shifting to 4th makes little to no difference at all. Just as soon as the load is gone so is the clacking. It seems like it looses power too but again I just recently purchased and really haven't gotten to know the truck just yet. Any advice on that issue as well.

Thanks in advance!

That vac line is connected to the EGR control module (or was) on my 96 2.3 and is currently sitting inside the cab waiting to be installed. This should be located on the driver side fender...This link should give you an idea what it is and the codes it throws when the vac is not working properly...

EDIT: You're welcome...I had originally mentioned that it goes to the front into a canister...that was in error as it isn't a purge valve component...it doesn't run to the front of the engine as was stated above...

Hey thanks for the info and the link I will certainly take a look at it. Thanks again I really appreciate it!:icon_thumby:

If your EGR isn't working the noise you hear maybe pinging. Pinging isn't good for the engine so I would get it fixed as soon as you can.

Thanks XLTsplash!

Yeah I've read and been told that it is no big deal to have that plugged up, that it serves no real purpose and that it runs just as good without it and etc... I guess everyone has their opinions and thoughts on things which I completely understand. However seems logical to me that if it is there it most likely serves a pretty good purpose and should be used.

Thanks again!
