hey, my name is jerry, i have a 1989 ford ranger, i put a 302 in it (v belt pulleys) i wanted to keep the same two plug in style alternator so i got one off a 92 f-150 and i put a v belt pully on it so i could run v belts. when i got the truck, the person i got the truck from was parting it out and some of the wires were cut so i tried using a "one wire style harness" off the 92 f-150, but when i got it all hooked up the alternator wouldnt charge. i know the alternator is good, my dad had it tested at a local part store, so i'm stuck.
any ideas or suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

switched ignition needs to go to one of those wires to "excite" the circuit

i hooked it up the same way it was on the f- 150 except there was one wire, im assuming it was the ignition wire, its green and red, i traced it on the old plug in that was on the ranger (stock) and splided into it. it was the same color and in the same position of the wire coming out of the plug in.

by "green and red" i assume that you mean red with green stripe which IIRC is ford coloring for switched ignition, verify that there is swiched ignition. also the excited circuit needs a load to charge against so the big post on the back needs to go to a battery. and the engine needs to be thoroughly grounded

the wire is actually green with a red stripe. i cant find my test light so i cant really test to see if it is swiched ignition. i have the ground bolted to the motor and running strait to the battery post along with a body ground. i dont quite understand anything else, would you care to explain a little more? thanks!

take that green/red stripe wire and run it to the back + post on the alternator and see if that works (IIRC that should not fry it if i am wrong)

ok, i'll try tomorrow, thanks for the help!:D
