I'm new to the smog and motor swap scene. My ranger is From Nevada so it doesn't have California regulation crap I it. It's now registered in California and I want to swap in a v8 or other motor, maybe a SOHC. I'm not sure what the legality of it is or how I would go about smogging it in CA. Any advice is appreciated.

looks like you have a 98 so you have to use a 98-01 explorer with alll(and i mean ) all of its engine, electronics, emisions and ECU.......95-97 will not pass....period
also any extra parts you put on(ie cats, headers, air intake, etc) all have to be Carb Approved.

as with anything call a smog referee and tell him your plans... they are the gods in that state to my understanding......

glad i dont live there, have fun!!!! i know a few other people online that have done the swap, California just has a ton of loops to go threw.
