This spring i plan on started to build up a 5.0 for my 89 ranger. I will be using a the shortblock from a late 80s f150, gt40 heads, edelbrock performer intake, and a 600cfm carb, also i will be running a rebuilt stock c4 with 4.10 gears in the rear. I was wondering what camshaft to use. I am lookin to make my truck good for frying the tires on the weekend but also i want something that will run good from redlight to redlight. any suggestions will be good.

The Performer intake will be a bottleneck. For cheap thrills, swap in a B303 roller and replace the stamped steel rockers with a set of full roller pedestal 1.7 rockers. Intake? Performer RPM, Air Gap RPM, Weiand Stealth, Ford A321. Take your pick, they're all good.

I can't seem to remember which 302's came hydraulic roller, but if yours is flat tappet I think either Comp Cams:

268H (218/218 @ .050", .456"/.456", 1500-5500)
XE262H (218/224 @ .050", .493"/.500", 1300-5600)

should be a decent conversation starting point. I think you should go the Performer Rpm Air Gap route and plan on using a 1/2" or 1" spacer for optimal throttle response and a little more zip. But if you already have a regular Performer that will work just fine too.

If hydraulic roller something like:

270HR (.215/.215 @ .050", .533"/.533", 1800-5000)
