I just bought myself a 4x4 1999 v6 4.0 Ranger and it has some quirks that I wanted opinions on.
It runs good but there is some things I notice.
When I first start it up for the day it’ll make a clinking noise sounding like something small and metal is bouncing around inside the bay. But it just happens for about 2 seconds after you first start it up.
Also, the truck tends to idle weird, bouncing up and down between 1000 and 2000 rpms, sounding like I’m hitting the gas off and on when I start it up.
Was just wondering if these are serious issues and what they could be. Other than those 2 things it runs fine, starts right up.

The first noise you describe sounds like lifter clatter. Its normal on first start.

The idleing is either an IAC (idle air control) or vacuum leak. Probably the IAC, its a 35-40 dollar part that anyone can change (2 bolts and a plug, all eaisly accessable) in about 5 minutes.
