I have a 92 ranger I am going to put a V-8 in it. The problem is I have a crate 351w a new double sump oil pan has 40,000- miles on it. I have a 302 out of a 91 tunderbird with 60,000 miles on it no double sump oil pan or pick up tube. It's in my 89 full size bronco. So I have to pull it out Iwant to junk the bronco anyway. Now I've run into a 96 explorer with a 302 with 130,000 miles I can get for a couple hundred . Limited budget but not in a big hurry (well really I am but trying to stay focused on other things that need to be done first around home you know what I mean). I'm trying to bet most everything together before I start the project as much as possible. I,m thinking even if I don't go with the 302 the explorer would be a good buy even for the 351 conversion? It's 4x4 and have tranny and trasfer case out of a f150 91.How about some thoughts.

How about some thoughts.
Don't mean to sound assinine, but, too many thoughts already. What do YOU want out of YOUR Ranger? Make a decision and run with it. Obviously, you have several options. Put them on the scale and weigh them. Only you know best what will satisfy you.

I can see your problems.
Sounds like a great 351 with low miles but it's the lack of good headers.
Thunderturd is also low miles but only, what, 150HP? Real mild cam and the E6 heads?
Explorer would be a great choice for the front end dress and the intake but don't think those front brackets will work on the 351 due to the increased deck height.
Maybe sell the 351 and TB motors and build up the Explorer? I hate spending my money on someone else's projects or second guessing them. You got time, sit down, paper and pencil (they still use that) and do some paper work.

96 explorer will have GT40 heads, and around 240hp I think. Maybe 225, I'm not sure, but much better then the TB engine. I would get the Explorer engine, or go 351.

I just dropped a 302 w/T-5 5 speed in my 92' supercab(2wd). If you need to look over at what's involved, go to my thread and you can kind of see what it all entails.

Of course, you'll be going 4wd, but it should be similar, just different on the drivetrain.

Thanks I really want to go with the 351 I guess the biggest thing I have a concern for is I want to put headers on it. That's to me is the biggest down fall for me. I don't want to make my own sause I don't want it to look like a hack job. I did see one ranger where they went with a double joint for the steering looked like it would work about the best.
