Using oil

It shouldn't be such a big deal.
You see most engines are designed to consume oil. That's one of the functions of the PCV Valve.
You see the top ring on any given piston does not get any real lubrication because it is the function of the first two sets of rings to control and hold the oil from running through.
Through what is known as POSTIVE CRANK VENTILATION (PCV) is that a small amount off fresh air is allowed to flow through the crank case and exhaust through the PCV valve and into your intake creating a very small but helpful consumption of oil.
This helps prolong the life of Your top piston ring as well as the valve stems.
So... If anybody says a motor should not burn any oil... he better return to his books. It's nothing new or out of the ordinary.
Even if you buy a brand new Mercedes Benz, Volks Wagen, Porsche, Citroen, Peugot or whatever... they state in the owners manuals that the engine should consum oil and that is normal. Only We in America don't put this in our owners manuals (Not that I have ever seen) that our engines should do this. But the true is that even our american muscle do burn oil because they are designed to do so. Is part of the way the engine should work.

A 2005 should not burn ANY oil between changes. MY 03 burns NONE. Car manufacturers love to say burning oil is normal to cover for thier lousy build tolerances and QC.

I made this post in March 2008, and I'm at 169K miles today. Oil consumption hasn't changed any at all.


A few weeks ago I posted the picture of my Ranger turning over 150K miles. Today, I changed the oil in it, and thought it was
interesting to see the color of the oil (at 3877 miles), and how much it has consumed. In the pictures, the screwdriver shows
where the oil level was the last time it was changed, using 4.5 QUARTS. There has been no oil added since it was
changed. I bought the truck with 36K miles on it, and since owning it, I've always maintained it myself, using the following:


1) Motorcraft or Purolator PAPER air filters (changed once a year)
2) ONLY Motorcraft oil filters, changed every oil change
2) Castrol GTX 5W30 (dino), changed between 3K and 4K miles
