So a couple weeks ago I found a 1988 ford ranger for sale and went and picked it up. The guy said the transmission is not original to the truck and that it came out of a Mazda truck around the same year but with the diesel. I was unaware that Mazda also had the diesel engine, but even more unaware that it and the 2.9 share the same bellhousing? Whether any of what he said is true or not I still want to know what transmission it is. I'm pretty positive it's the m5od but which one? I'm trying to post pictures but it wont let me it keeps telling me a security token was missing. The code on the sticker is F27A ZA B010626

Upload the pics to imgur and use the BB code links in your post.

The only part of what you were told that is believable is that it wasn't the original transmission.

And the 4.0 version no less, which will work on a 2.9.

I saw that. I'm assuming it's the HD model then but since it isn't listed that way, I didn't want to say or assume anything.

It's not. The part number rules it out, as does the trans designator. Plus at the top of the page it says that list only applies though 1996.

F part numbers are things that were introduced in the 90s, and despite using all the same parts, I have never seen an HD listed as an R1.

I will try imgur, I'll have to set up an account for it I'm guessing. So if F means 90s then I'm guessing the 2 means 92? Meaning it came off of a 1992 4.0, I'm not sure what the HD version is you guys are talking about but I appreciate the help. So is the m5r1 the better manual transmission to have in terms of factory ranger transmissions or is this something I should look into getting rid of? I'm actually planning on doing a 4.0 swap soon but eventually want to build a 5.0 for it. Itd be awesome if this transmission would hold up to it

The M5OD is the good trans.

F2 would indicate that 92 was the first year it was used, but the ZA part seems to indicate it was for use on a 4.0, so you already have the trans you need for a 4.0 swap. It won't bolt to a 5.0.

The HD version was used on the OHC 4.0, and isn't really that different, it just has an extra bolt hole on the bell.

Awsome so now I just need the 4.0 lol. I'm getting ancey to start this swap :icon_bounceblue:

Theres also a spot near the top of the transmission on the second picture with a little red plug, maybe the reverse sensor? The plug is pretty banged up I doubt it even works anymore

I can't find the pictures again. Reverse switch is on the driver's side. Some of the earlier ones had a neutral switch that was basically the same part on the passenger's side.
