Rear end locking up in 4x??

Hello, I'm fairly clueless about axles, but was hoping somebody could help me out. My rear dif is getting pretty howly and I found a complete rear end from a 2008 ranger w/4000 miles. Would this fit a 2001 v6 stock 4x4----8.8 REAR END 4:10 RATIO<------desription of part. And would 400 bucks be a better deal than getting mine rebuilt? Also, the tonight i put my truck into 4x for no real good reason in a parking lot,and the rear end seemed to be locking up as I tried to accelerate, as the wheels were screeching a bit. I stopped and put it back into 2x and no prob. I tried 4x again and didnt have the problem, but this has me thinking I've got a serious issue. thanks for your responses.

Now, it won't even go in reverse in 4x????......something is horribly wrong..lol......2 months, new tranny, and a ton of other crap, just found out i need ball joints all around.....and now frozen rear end....hit the ranger lotttery.

I can't beleive an '01 is giving you this much trouble... was there any know issues with this truck or the 4x4 system?

Yes, that other axle will fit your ranger, just make sure it is the same ratio as yours...As far as your current axle, drop the rear cover and see if you have any broken metal parts in the bottom. Its unlikely, but it could be your tcase, not your axle, dropping the cover will tell you which it is. Thats not too bad a price, depending on your area, and yeah, its definitely cheaper than rebuilding

How can I find out what ratio I have? This truck has siphoned about 4 grand since buying it. My idiot brother "did me a favor" and I was dumb enought to buy a truck i had'nt checked out since it was so cheap, and supposedly " a really great truck"......my fault....argh..but It was pretty obvious it had been driven into the ground, since ive been working on it for pretty much the whole summer. I thought i'd have found the bottom a long time ago,but it's something new weekly. The transfer case could be locking up the rear wheels? Seems like the rear wheels are just stuck when in 4x4.

yeah your t-case could be cause the power runs from the motor, through the tranny, and through the t-case irregardless if you're in 4x4 or 2wd.

hmmm....how's that tcase fluid level? hows that front shaft's joints doin'? How about the bracketry that bolts the front axle to the frame?

hold on a minute, you put your truck in 4 wheel drive in a pavement parking lot? that could have screwed things up... you DO NOT want to engage 4x4 on dry pavement, that binds things up. if it drives normal in 2 wheel drive, it's not your rear axle... if you have problems in 4 wheel drive it's either in the front axle or transfer case.

on second thought, reread your post and realized you said your axle is howling, then it could be shot, but putting it in 4 wheel drive on pavement wouldn't help the situation...

I just went and found some dirt to check out whats going on, and it seems like even in D it seems like the wheels are locked up. Something is broke, that's for sure.

Definetly open that diff up and see how it looks inside. Take some pics and post them up. Check all your fluid levels too to give you a hint at anything else.

thanks mike, I think I'm going to take it back to the trans shop on monday. I have a warranty on the rebuild, but something tells me its something not covered, like the axle. argh

115k, with plenty it seems with little maintenance. What baffles me, is that the tranny shop just did the full rebuild 2 months ago, and they checked out the driveline and components and didn't have anything to say. So, I guess I'll hear the scoop on monday.
