Alright, I am putting a new motor in my 98 ranger. I pushed the engine close to the transmission, but the pegs were not in the bellhousing yet...but I bolted the flexplate to the converter all the way, then I noticed transfluid coming out of the bottom...we were pushing on the engine trying to push it to the transmission that last 5/8" of an inch...so I took it back out because I was worried this is what it looks like...hopefully this is normal....this is my theory...there is a seal there, when the torque converter is pushed all the way in the trans it is sealed, that last little bit made it so it didn't seal and was pouring out transfluid...is this correct? or did we break something?...hopefully not! here is the pick...it is coming up over the seal...not where it meets the seal to trans

Did you mesh the torque converter all the way in? The seal should work to keep the tranny fluid from running out, I have had my A4LD out twice and no problem like this on my 2.9L v6 on a 88 Ranger 4x4.

no, the torque converter did not go all the way in because it was bolted to the flexplate and there was still at least 5/8" gap between trans and engine...but we tipped the trans up, cleaned up the fluid, put the T.C. all the way in and lowered it and now it stopped leaking...so I am guessing that that front rubber seal mates with the shaft of the torque converter and creates a seal

You didn't put bellhousing bolts in and try to tighten them, did you?

Yes, that is correct, at least how it was on my 1990 with an A4LD.

I had the same problem getting it to go the last 5/8". It turned out that the smaller input shaft on the tranny was hanging up going into the TC. I found it easiest to pull the inner input shaft out of the tranny, stick it into the TC, and then stick the TC into the tranny. When it's in all the way, the TC should interfer with the ribbing at the back of the bellhousing. Put the tranny in, bolt it to the engine, and then you should have to pull the TC towards the engine a fraction of an inch to bolt it to the flywheel, thus eliminating the interference with the ribbing.

so you bolted the torque converter to the flexplate then tried to install the engine to the transmission?

thats the wrong way to do it. the converter needs to be seated in the transmission then the engine gets mated to the bell housing. after all that then you bolt the converter to the flexplate.

at this point you need at least a front pump seal for the transmission and you need to hope that you didn't damage the pump spline

no, I left the torque converter installed on the transmission, I just didn't have the engine block tight to the bellhousing...for some reason it is being stubborn and wont go the extra 5/8" of an inch...the seal looks fine...the torque converter was never forced into it or I am pretty sure the engine and what not would be up against the transmission...no more fluid has came out either from the transmission since I reinstalled the torque converter

I pryed that seal out...it looked fine...but they are cheap and who I'd rather change it now when I can get at it...as for the splines...all of them look good...but for some reason I can't get the tc to go in and rub on the ribs...I know what you mean it is suppose to do because on my al4d on my bronco it did it...but for some reason I can't get it to do it on this....hmmm....I don't know what to do
