upgrading from 3.73 to 4.10 or 4.56

The speed sensor is on the ring gear, a gear change wont affect the speedo.

thanks for the replys.

one more question. at 65mph crusing relatively level ground im at 2200 to 2300 rpm with overdrive on and i assume 5th gear. What will the rpm change be with 4.10 or 4.56 at 65 mph? the tire gear ratio chart doesnt seem to work for my situation since it is done with a manual crusing 65 in 4th gear.

thanks

(30 inch tires 3.73 gears)

you have either a 4 speed or 5 speed overdrive auto. either way, your overdrive is 0.75:1. to figure out your RPM at 65 with either gear ratio, you just times the RPM figure on the chart by .75.

4.10's: 2,244
4.56's: 2,490

i know, i know, your getting 2,200 RPM out of your 3.73's. your actual RPM may be a little higher due to torque converter slip (while its unlocked) or variance in tire diameter (a 30" tire is rarely actually 30")...these are ballpark figures only.

you can have it. ive owned torque monsters before. they are boring to drive. i like to feel like im doing something instead of just sitting in the drivers seat waiting to arrive. a high revving engine like a 3.0 combined with a 5 speed is a blast to drive on a curvey mountain road or passing on the highway. slamming gears, giving the clutch a work out, hearing that dual exhaust cackle....gets my juices flowin'.

im thinking 4.10s. i really want the power of the 4.56s but dont want my mpg's to suffer. 4.10 seems to be a happy medium between low end power and highway fuel efficiency.

thanks

your more likely to gain fuel mileage with the gear switch. keeping your engine near its peak torque RPM is where you gain the highest VE and thus, the best mileage. i can gain 2-3 MPG just by dropping into 4th while cruising down the highway.

if i only had a 5 speed:sad: i got a great deal on this truck when i bought it

Boy I am glad I found this thread. I am completely new to this and just picked up a pair of 31/10.5's for my 99 Ranger XLT 3.0. Ive noticed that the 3.0 definitely likes to run hard, much higher rpm's than my Exploder :-)

Anyways, I don't do any towing or anything. Occasional hauling of firewood or maybe helping a friend move furniture thats it. Should I go with the 4.10's? From reading this thread that seems to be the medium range for torque. Definitely thinking going the cheaper route and looking for an 8.8 that you guys were mentioning earlier--but how do I know what to look for? What vehicles would I check / how do I check what I currently have? I know that my Ranger is 99.9% factory original.

Another thing--are there guides on how to swap these things out? I guess I could just got a shop to do it though, do you think that would be expensive? Thanks again guys...this thread should probably be a sticky

check the tech library. all the info you need is there. you can figure out your current axle ratio by reading your axle code off the drivers door sticker and looking it up in the table in the tech library. you can also use this method to locate a 4.10-loaded axle in the junkyard.

alternately, there is a tag attached to one of the differential cover bolts that will list the gearing and carrier type.

4.10's would be OK for 31's. i have 31's and plan on going 4.56's when i can afford it because it really doesnt hurt this engine to wind up.

What exactly is the difference--does the engine rev higher with the 4.56s?

the higher (numerically) the gear, the more mechanical advantage the motor has over the wheels.

its the same effect as starting off in 2nd gear rather than 1st...only to a smaller degree.
