Well, I bought it. Now What?

Maybe I should have waited for a better fit, but the price was right and it seems like an interesting exercise in hands-on learning. We’ll see.

Here is the goal: An around town beater truck that has some off-road chops for mild to medium backroad rambles.

The budget is very tight, and as of now have no idea where to do the work. Genius plan, no? At least I have access to decent tools. Fo now, I’m focusing on what I need/want based on the state of the truck as it sits then hatch a pla
Lost an axle seal on the way home, so there is two one. Hoping for the best while I make my way down from Seattle to the Bay Area. Thoughts

I think the most juice for the least squeeze is to leave the body lift and concentrate on the springy bits. The truck rides OKish, but I’ll likely be addressing a bunch of that anyway. Does that make sense? I’m open to suggestions.

So what do you think, experts? Assume I know nothing, but am looking forward to learning and making informed choices. Who knows, maybe this thread will help others like me as well.

Thanks!

photos posting soon. The page keeps CRASHING when I try to add them from my phone.

Unlifting is uncool.

Unlifting is cool

If you're wanting to lower it down, taking the body lift out is much easier than reversing the suspension lift and is what I would do

Suspension travel will get you more capability off-road, than a body lift. I'd remove the body lift if you don't want the truck to sit as high, assuming the tires will still clear.

I fully agree, but all of the suspenders are beat shirtless, so I'm going to have to do that stuff anyway. Did I mention I'm trying to do this on a a shoestring? It may be that I have to address 5hings on both sides of the frame, but I was thinking what I was describing (Leave the body lift, replace the worn out suspension)

I agree that the sprung half of the equation yeilds more off road mojo, though my off road needs are modest. My thought was that if I could clear an ample tire, I'd have all I needed. Road manners are important to me too.

I will add photos to the OP, but my phone is giving me fits. Posting photos is crashing the page.

Well, what were you going to replace the suspension with?

All the wear parts are the same with a lift or without minus the springs and shocks which with normal shocks price doesn't change drastically with length, and removing a body lift mainly you just need to replace the bolts with the stock length versions...

Shocks tamed my cement truck. You know, I believe with some 33s, she would be a nice looking critter. I wonder what the previous owner did to raise the front so much? Body lift most likely?

Also my opinion.....find another grill. You can pay for the replacement with that one you have now. BTW, me from Mt View. Now in Texas where it safe, kind of. -Doug

Leave the suspension lift.

Replace body lift with urethane bushings. Use the recommended grease.

Both of mine are lifted 3-4 inches, causing road manners to improve, not decline.

Please listen to us, we know what we're talking about.
