Is unleaded premium gas bad for these 2.9? I went for a fill up yesterday, and somehow the pump it instead of the 89 oct. now my rig has developed a very strange stutter or vibration. it feels like i have a flat tire or like something is out of balance.
just wondering.

ya, that was my thought. i think im having other problems. think i have to see my mechanic tomorrow and see what he says is going on. noticed the issue yesterday but the symptoms are getting worse.

I would put regular gas in it (top it off), and just see if it's just your mind playing tricks on you.

Ha, just saying. I know that when i get my car back from the mechanic it "always makes a new sound" for a couple of days, then its "gone".

Usually high octane gives my engine a little more pep...even my Harley engine does better.....maybe the fuel had some moisture/water in it....put a bottle of water/moisture remover in the tank along with a bottle of injector cleaner...drive it for a day or two before you go to the mechanic..... if it doesnt straighten up let him look at it... my $00.02

well, i dont think that fuel is the problem.
yesterday i noticed as i was coming to a stop it "felt" like i had a wrapped rotor at the last 5-10 mph before i came to a complete stop. then as i accelerated it would feel the same way.
tonight i went to the store. as i accelerated i noticed it felt the same way when i was just moving along at about 25 mph. then the engine felt like it was missing. I couldnt feel any pulsating thru the break pedal. i wish i could explain it better.

Put it up on a lift and see how much resistance you get to turning the driveshaft in neutral - mine had so much resistance it turned the motor over! It's my tranny. I put atf in it and it cleared it up, but you can still tell it's shot. It was doing that exact same "pulsing brakes" feeling at 15mph.

a 2.9 runs perfectly happy on 87 octane.

If anyone wants to waste money I'll provide my PayPal adress so I can properly waste if for them.

interesting thing i have found with older vehicles, some run better on high octane gas, i had to put octane booster in my f-250, it had a stock 460 with 360 000km on the clock, would run like CRAP on regular with no booster... (booster was cheaper than premium)

conversely, my dad used to have a 68 mustang that would purr on 87 octane, but would only run in 2 throttle positions with anything higher, idle would be fine, and WOT would be fine, anything in between it would sputter and give problems... this, of course, is not normal operation, but it does happen to some vehicles, i have no attempt for an explanation for this phenomenon though...

mine runs better with the 89 vs 87.
I dont think the issue is fuel related at this point

Its all in your mind guys. Esp in the states where ethanol is sold. Check your fuel filter.Since ethanol boost octane levels, a lot of gas stations put the same fuel i in the 87 and 89 tanks. Its legal because it meets the octane rating guidelines. Most vehicles are rated at 87 octane, stop wasting your money.

i run premium....but i also tend to advance my timing and make my engines flow to there peak, my engines always run the best anyone has ever seen

one gas station here sells both the 87 and 89 octane for the same price. so, yeah, i fill up with the 89 in all my vehicles. no problems so far.
