unleaded premium

All my vehicles take 87 except the truck. it runs like crap unless it gets the 89, probably changed when i upped the compression in the 5.0

89 Is premium?? lol

You can get 94 octane around here...
The only time the higher octane matters is if you have a high-performance engine, at which point it wants better gas.

Your 2.9l will only run *better* on higher octane gas, unless something is crazy-messed up.

one gas station here sells both the 87 and 89 octane for the same price. so, yeah, i fill up with the 89 in all my vehicles. no problems so far.

if you live in canada, like i assume you do, both husky and mohawk no longer sell 87 octane, so they sell 89 for the same price as 87, and i'm 90% sure they have minimal additives (additives that make their gas last longer, the detergents and such are still there)

Surrey, i'm fairly sure everyone is talking about 89 as a midgrade, 91 is considered high octane, i think chevron up here is one of the only companies that sell 94, however if you go to boundary bay, you can get 104 octane... but it must be put into a jerry can

I'm fairly certain that is something of a relative statement.

91 is not "better" than 87, nor is 87 "better" than 91. 91 has more additives to keep it from pinging in high compression engines. BUT those same additives make it harder to ignite. A gallon of 91 octane contains LESS energy than a gallon of 87.

only by the percentage that the pure gasoline is diluted by the additives which i can't see being in the greater than 1% range

High compression motors run higher octane because the octane rating is the "resistance to combust" if you will. Higher octane fuel makes it the piston will compress the A/F mixture fully without detonation. Octane boosters are pointless unless you are running "premium" gas and it isn't cheaper unless your buying it from the dollar store even then what are you putting in your tank?

Your issue can't be linked to octane unless it was the other way around. I.E. Runs crappy with lower octane and good at high octane

More than likely the 89 contains ethanol. Thats how they're sellin it at the same price. They actually sell 89 here at places cheaper that reg 87. Our state makes them label the ethanol.

1) i CAN get octane booster for cheaper than the difference between a tank of 87 and 89, there are parts stores in canada that will give 75% discounts if you know the right people, and not in a thieving type of way, depending on the sponsors and who you are... they sponsor a lot of shops, race teams, highschools, companies... i have gotten kleenflo octane booster and lucas oil's octane booster for around the $1 a bottle mark...

2) you figure out why it was that my dad's 68 mustang wouldn't run worth crap on anything other than 87, back in the late 80's to early 90's where ethanol didn't exist in canada

i was referring to several companies up here that simply do not sell 87 octane... mohawk sells 90, 92 and 94 octane, same with husky, chevron sells 94, and i'm told it's the best, but in my area, chevrons are pretty well unheard of... i don't know what else they carry, but last i remember, they had 87, 94 and everything inbetween...
