danka for the immediate solution, but being able to search for terms like 2.9L etc would really be usefull - is there not an exemptions list for the search engine you can add things like 2.8L 2.9L 4.0L etc etc.

You can narrow searches to a particular sub forum. IE if you are looking for something pertaining to a 4.0L search dor results in the 4.0L sub forum.

It won't catch stuff that wasn;t placed within that section, but that's why we encourage people to post in the pertinant sub forum rather than in a catch all like general discussions, or non-tech section like the show-off sections.

me, myself, and I - I am not interested in a 2.9 to 4.0 swap, I wanted to help/point someone else in the right direction... I was just appalled to see that the search engine is so weak it filters out ALL (bold caps) the relevant terms and only searches on the word "swap" - that is a dire flaw in the search engine... drastically in need of white-list modification/grey list/whatever so that the search becomes useful for anyone who is less skilled at search than me.

mysql won't let the forum search things like 2.9, 4.0, etc. The best I can do is add a code for a search box at the top of the forum.

that is a dire flaw in the search engine..
Not really, can you imagine how many useless (to your particular search) threads have 2.9 mentioned in them?

There are currently 170,492 threads posted here

It's not a flaw, it's by design. Due to how the forum software's built in search engine functions, the amount of results that would pop if you included those short terms is staggering. Each instance of each word in the search would trigger a hit. Not the combination of all words, but each individual word.

If one really wants to perform a search of the site using those terms, their best option is to use google's site search feature. IE: "site:therangerstation.com 2.9 to 4.0 swap"

cool, as long as you can fix the things you can fix and you try... I get the limitations of code sometimes. Just wanted to let you know so if it WAS fixable you could attend to it.

Adding the search bar resulted in a problem in how the forum was loading some pages.

I deactivated the search bar and created a link in the menu for MEGA SEARCH that will take you to a search page and eliminate this problem.

BTW, the main website and forum uses two different databases, so I can't configure the search here to include the pages on the main site. The search I added will search anything anywhere at TheRangerStation.com.

I figured it would be as easy as whitelisting "2.3" "2.8" "2.9",etc in the exceptions list :P my bad....

and when Jim said

mysql won't let the forum search things like 2.9, 4.0, etc. ...

I was fine with that, he looked into it tried, and reported back the system is too weak. I would be totally happy if you put it back the way it was, and said use google to do a (google) search like this "2.9 to 4.0 swap site:therangerstation.com" - google is a very powerful tool and I am ok using someone else's tools when your own can't be re-factored.

Google site search is so good here that it's my only site suggestion when I start typing...
