UHaul won't rent to exploders?

Nothing the matter with Firestone. It was a bad batch and a media humped it. My father-in-law, a PhD who was a chief scientist for the Air Force, still thinks that the Explorer looks too tall for it's width--and he had a B200 Dodge van with this fiberglass roof so you could stand up and that crap welded on extension that Ford and Dodge love instead of extending the wheelbase. That van was fukin deadly. I've rather drive an Explorer drunk without a seatbelt than ride in that van with Ralph Nader behind the wheel.

U-Haul blows. I mean it's been a number of years but they used to hook up your trailer lights by unscrewing the lenses out of the tail lights and using alligator clips to attach wires. A long, long time ago they rented me a strap hitch that attached to the bumper of my old Ford. It put the hitch ball so high up in the air that the trailer was almost impossible to load. the last thing I rented was a car trailer and I had to take the fenders off to fit a fullsize pickup on it. I've never had a clean transaction with them. At least their equipment looks better than it used to. When I was a kid we moved with a truck that had a standard transmission in it and a big hole in the cab floor you had to try not to fall through.

Your original statement I commented on was "They won't rent a trailer to someone if the trailer when loaded will exceed the weight rating of the tow vehicle." Which is incorrect. I can rent a trailer from them, that has a max TRAILER capacity that if loaded to, would exceed my VEHICLE max capacity. I have done so several times, last time being less than a week ago. They just make you aware of the max weight you can put into the trailer, so you dont overload the vehicle.

I got Firestone tires on my Ranger, I've bought 9 Firestone tires for this Ranger(had to replace one, the sidewall had a defect) I HAD to buy them, as the dealer I go to does not have many 14" dia tires in stock, that is what they had.

You can order tires online for not too bad of a price....

I've had good luck with UHaul. I volunteer with a community theater group and we rent a truck (26') to haul our stuff for shows. The local shop in Concord, NH has always been friendly & helpful, and the equipment has been top notch. I even got a truck last time that had less than 10,000 miles on it with a screaming big-block in it.

a few years back i went to move and i used my '78 23' dodge motorhome, the motorhome came off the line with a 318 but at some time someone swaped and 440 in it, when i went down to uhal the kid behind the counter said the biggest i could tow with the motorhome was a a 6x6 trailer because the vin said it was a 316 under the hood, after an hour of fighting and calling down to the dealership with the block casting numbers i finely rolled off the lot with the largest trailer on the lot. and i know if i would have been some random idiot i wouldnt have gotten it.

I did read the disclaimer after you posted it the first time. I was just clearing it up for anybody that might care.

As far as every u-haul being different, it really shouldnt be. I used to rent u-haul equipment and every station runs on the same system, that you input the information into and it either lets you, or doesnt let you rent the equipment. I thought it was somewhat strange that one person in here said they dont rent to any explorer base vehicle (I'm assuming navajo and mountaineer) because that is not u-haul policy.

rollovers were not caused by tires, they were caused by idiots driving explorers as if they were cars instead of SUVs..

I was explaining their reason.... tire failure caused idiots to roll over.

Firestone vs. Explorer vs. baka driver

1.) To start off with, the Ford Explorer was in no way the cause of those accidents. Just more prone to roll-overs due to the higher center of gravity. But, the recommended tire pressure for the Explorer was set too low. For a 235/75R15 tire, the recommended tire pressure was 26PSI. You can check it on firestonecompleteautocare.com .

2.) Next are the tires. All tires are prone to failure, regardless of make or brand. Proper manitence prevents such events. Also, some tires do suffer from poor design and/or construction. The Firestone Wilderness tire was one of them. And would have a higher chance of failure due to the lack of proper inflation. But could last its life of the tread just fine with a more correct pressure of 32~35PSI. Remember, lower tire pressure will generate more heat on the tire.

3.) Lasty, the human element. Most people are not trained or do not know how to react in a tire failure event. Instinctively, most people will press down on the brakes. Which is the worst thing to do. Or when the vehicle suddenly pulls in one direction. And some people just don't properly drive a SUV type vehicle. Making sudden lane changes, too of high speed in turns, over-speeding on the highway, or improper weight loading.

Its bad enough to have a problem with just one of these. But when all 3x factors are combined, an accident is bound to happen sooner or later.

it wasnt the explorers fault, but ford had a contract with firestone... those tires were only on fords. i dont know why they singled out the explorer, and then never realized that the tires were recalled. i think uhaul might have thought they would show ford that they could hurt their business, but all it does is make people hate uhaul.

I was able to rent a trailer and haul it behind my Ranger. and yes, they checked the truck and my homemade hitch too...

We went thru 2 sets of Firestones on our '94 Explorer, they kept blowing belts but never blew out though.

Dad had switched to Goodyears before the recall because the Firestones wouldn't stay together. The sidewalls did a weird rot thing on all four on the inside after just a couple years so he switched them back the Firestone Destination LE's, and they have been doing fine.

Dad had kept the recalled firestones for impliment tires, so he cash in both sets.

I have no problem at all with the current Firestones, I ran Widetrack Baja AT's (made by Peerless/Firestone) for about 50k miles on my F-150 and had absolutly no complaints.

As I recall, the '94 still has the 26PSI sticker... and that wouldn't be great for a perfect tire. Dad always ran 35 though...

Same over here too. The uhaul guy said it might have to do with the transmissions going out while towing, not sure if that is accurate or not.

As a general rule of thumb Explorers have the same transmission as the same year of Ranger... so that is a load of BS. That edict came down at the same time as the tire recall, and problem stemmed from that with all the bad press the Explorer was getting.

I have done a fair amount of towing with my Ranger (just used it a couple weeks ago to drag a big PTO manuer spreader around) and with the weakest A4LD and the weak factory cooling system and not surpisingly it made it without a problem. Dunno how many car trailer loads of brush and timber it has hauled across town to the city yard waste disposal dump.

U-Haul doesn't care if you toast a tranny, they care if your overloaded car loses control on the interstate and wipes out a family... because lawyers will come knocking on their door for knowingly renting out that trailer to a vehicle uncapable of safely towing it. If Ford says your vehicle can tow X much and it can't, it is because something is wrong with it.

Besides that, if it was for the tranny, Rangers, Navajos, Mountaineers, Sport Tracs and Aviators would be on the list too.
