Uh Oh.....MPG controversy....

Took a trip to New Hampshire in the Ranger. Watching the split time data, I was getting 31-38 mpgs up and back in mostly highway driving. Presently the average mpgs are at 27.4. Average speed is at 32 mph in mixed driving. Honestly it doesn’t take much effort to average in the lower 30s mpgs on the highway. The ecoboost continues to impress.

Currently getting 19 City, 21 Mixed and 23 Highway on my 4x4 Sport with +1 Sized tires at 265/65/17 (OEM size was 255/65/17) with a dead-on corrected speedometer via FPP Tune calibrator. I suspect the OEM speedometer calibration reads a little fast and would cause a slightly inflated MPG number over the span of a tank. I don't go by the trucks estimating either its always high as well. Hand calculations only.

The onboard mpg calculator is definitely high. Usually by about a mpg or two. Close enough to get an idea how you are doing but not if you want accurate numbers. I don't think anyone who has commented on the subject, regardless of vehicle manufacturer, has ever reported that they were accurate. Some worse than others.

I'm relatively sure there's a process to calibrate the on-board system, people that have done it say it's then within .5mpg or so.

Hand calculated or truck computer? My average is about the same as yours, 27 mpg.

But 31-38 mpg? :icon_surprised: On our 2019 Ranger... maybe downhill, with a stiff tail wind.

The problem I’ve found with the onboard mpg calculators are they are based on how much gas the car “thinks” it’s using. So if you over fill the tank, or there is something wrong with the float, you get crappy readings.

Biggest thing I’ve seen effects them is if the tank gets over filled, even a little.
