Uh Oh.....MPG controversy....

Most gas is also very crappy. I had a Ford fusion hybrid and was supposed to get 47-47 MPG all day long. I got 39 MPG and that was on just regular gas. I switched to Ethanol Free gas after a year and got 44+ MPG. Oregon has very crappy gas due to the Ethanol they add. Now funny thing that is supposed to make us get better mileage and pollute less? WRONG. I traded my Fusion on the Ranger. I do miss the MPG but really like my Ranger. Ford admitted that they basically test in a ideal conditions on flat level test tracks. Not real world conditions to say the least. I did get $700 from Ford due to the over inflation of the mileage. Then was on a Class Action Law Suit and got another $500.
I am curious if having a canopy or bed cover help or hurt mileage??

Ethanol was always calculated to reduce your fuel economy. The energy content by volume is lower.

Depends on cab/bed configuration/depth/shape.

It makes more difference with a small cab and long bed than vice versa.

+1 on the ethanol reducing fuel economy. Everything I've ever seen on it was environmentally driven and to reduce US dependency on foreign oil.

As far as the bed cap, generally they are mpg neutral if it's height and width are the same as the cap. But like mentioned above, there is a lot of variables in the mix. Cab length, bed length, does the cap have racks, is it conformal to the cab, etc.

My 2000 Ranger with the 2.5L engine averaged around 25 mpgs over a year. Better in summer...worse in winter, but with summer blends I was getting 27-28 mpgs with a mix of driving. My 2019 is at 26.5 over the past 20,000 miles...most of those driven on the winter blend. But with the summer blend, I'm getting in the low 30s with highway driving and around 28 with mixed driving. Given the significant boost in power and loads of creature features relative to the old Ranger, this is quite an improvement overall.

The 2.3 Ecoboost is quite an engine!

Do you live where it's flat? Or do a lot of highway driving?

I'm amazed at people who get mid-high 20s in the new trucks. My usual driving is 40-60 mph, and in a rural area.. so minimal stop & go.. I drive pretty conservatively and only get about 21 mpg 🤷‍♀️

I'm still happy with the economy I'm getting considering how much power it makes and how big of a brick it is to move through the air.

Both my Lightning and Ranger have bed covers on them. Not particularly for mileage considerations, but for appearance. I don't really care what mileage any of my five vehicles get. I drive them all like I stole them, so they all suck fuel down like it grows on trees.

@Blmpkn What octane fuel are you running?

We're averaging 26 mpg.... here in the mountains of Colorado. Shell Premium 91 Octane

I've just run poverty gas so far.

I've always done that too, until this truck. Turbo motors are much more efficient running higher octane fuel.

I wondered if the “new” generation rangers required the higher octane, Ive never drove a gasoline turbo motor, just farm tractor diesels.

The 2.3 eb is more efficient on 87 than my old turbo subaru was on 91 lol.

Couldn't even DREAM of running the subie on less than 91 without getting a hole in the top of a piston.. and that's with less boost AND a lower static CR.

Boggles my mind how the 2.3 eb can take so much boost with such a high cr ratio with such low octane honestly. Super impressive.

Timing probably fires the spark plug while the piston is at bottom dead center. ;-)

So far....town...
The 150 powerboost gets 22 to 24.unladen driving with an egg.

20 not paying attention.

My neighbors crew 2019 ranger gets 19 average.

70 unladen...21. 8x unladen....19 once you get out a tank..

5200 miles towing 9700....8.5 to 9.5 mpg

If I had to tow over 7k daily...Godzilla would be better...

I can't wait for them to hybrid the 2.3. though the ranger is at the limit of the 2.3 once a guy does a small lift and runs 33 in aggressive tires....not much eco left....just boost....that's why I won't run one in my ranger. A godzilla would get better mpg.

I was shocked at how well the 150 does.

The 2.3 Ecoboost is a monster .. hybrid it will be some next level stuff for the ranger.

I have 32" muddies and a 2.5" level, I don't think the 21mpg is bad by any means. If I had stock tires and no level I'm sure I'd be getting 23 or so. The trick with maintaining a decent mpg with the new rangers is to NOT run 10 ply tires it seems like. Everyone on the 5g forum who has 10 ply 32-33" tires only get like 15mpg lol.

Most I've towed is around 6300lbs and the EB net me 13ish mpg during the tow, I was definitely impressed with that.

The new ranger is a home run I think. It more or less has v8 power, but gets better economy than a (gasser) v8 whether it's empty OR has a load on. I think it's the perfect sort of "weekend warrior" tow rig for sure. I've also been wanting a factory 4cyl turbo truck for the better part of a decade.. so I appreciate it even more.
