Uh Oh.....MPG controversy....

I'm not to surprised. A few days ago someone told me that people were complaining that their Ranger's weren't getting the expected fuel mileage.

I know my combined on this 2019 has been 19 MPG, but I haven't exactly been driving it conservatively. Plus, I have a little larger and heavier tire on it, so that can factor in too.

I thought the EPA rateings seemed lofty.

You can't change the laws of physics... trucks are not aerodynamic and no matter what magic you do to the engine, it's still gotta push a 2 ton brick through the air.

dont forget about the big box behind the cab. look up "opposite of aerodynamics" and you will see a square open top box. more drag than the brick.

Box fills with air and is largely innert

Especially short and deep boxes that are all the rage today.

EPA ratings eh? Every new vehicle I've purchased since the early 70's has missed the EPA ratings. sure, they're supposed to be better than they used to be. I still view them as a general range where my mileage may be. YMMV doesn't refer to only "method".

questions:
A. what alcohol content fuel does the EPA test with?
A-1. summer or winter blend?
B. what's the average alcohol content of most fuels?

C. Do they factor in the 400 pounds of junk the average person carries in their glove box
D. Do they base these test on actual driving on actual roads or some mythical fantasy world where the streets aren't full of potholes, fat construction workers, and idiots on cell phones.
E. Does idle time come into play?

Yes, ferris bueller proved this theory. And red.

You forgot 10 lbs of keys, loyalty cards, personal mace and keychain trinkets hanging from the ignition switch.

Actually mythbusters tested this.

They found the air actually rotates in a circle (like a sideways tornado) behind the cab actually HELPING aerodynamics. Proving also running with the tailgate down makes MPG worse by negateing the circulation effect.

All they woulda had to do is throw some loose hay in the bed, open the slider and drive 30mph to realize that infact, the air does swirl :)

I said before that ford needs to change their testing speed from 55 mph to something more common but was basically told I don’t know what I’m talking about because “everyone” drives 55 mph.
