My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
Me, my buddy and his wife took the ranger for a drive (they love my ranger).
On the way back, I noticed she was low on power, my buddy noticed she stinks (like oil)
She has been smoking a little more than usual lately, but mostly during warm up.
oil looks ok, smells a lil burnt, a little on the high side level.
I am talking about the ranger, not the wife.
What am I looking at here? bad rings? bad valve seats/guides/seals etc?
Its an OEM 4.0 OHV 93k miles original.
She passed SMOG check recently, so emissions are ok as well.

Run your finger in the tailpipe and see if its oily.

Could just be as simple as a stuck open PCV

Oil rising can mean water getting in, it would turn white after a bit

I would think if it had enough to up the oil level there'd be snot somewhere.

You sure you didnt just overfill it last time?

I am not, I might have overfilled it a little topping it off in a hurry.

I haven't looked under the hood yet besides checking the oil in the dark under crappy flash light.
Dealing with the sudden death of a loved one...never a dull moment.

Rising oil level could be fuel as well. Added smoke and burnt smell could be injector over fueling thinning oil, raising level, causing dieseling through EGR depending on level, poor performance etc. Injector can stick instantly.

The oil level is not rising, I just may have topped off a little too much. Its on the high side of the dipstick marks. No dieseling either, starts, runs and shuts down quite normal. Sometimes hard to start, which I think is fuel pump.

I replaced the injectors when I did the intake gasket/cam synchro. They were cheapos, $59 for the set instead of each. I saved the stock injectors, may get em cleaned and swap em back in.

I started and drove again last night. ran like a champ, just smells funny after.

during warm up I was shooting some revs and noticed it would cause my oil pressure gauge to fluctuate.

shooting revs would increase the oil pressure, then make it drop lower than normal, then settle back to normal...is this normal?

I'm not so sure about the dropping lower than normal part.. but yeah revs will increase pressure.

If you have the stock gauge that sounds like the sender wire is loose

a normal engine that just idles will/should send only 5-7 psi in normal instances. so your raising and lowering of the needle is accurate.
