U-joint has left the chat…

my parents used to own a driving range and our ball picker also had the full cage. everyone tries to hit, ha ha ha. i hated driving it because every once in a while, someone would hit it and scare the crap out of me.
I am so effed in the head this is precisely why I would volunteer to drive it.....although I wouldn't make it easy for em...golfers have dimpled balls.

1899??? What are you? A vampire? Did they have trucks then?? LOL

@lil_Blue_Ford you may have to break down and go to a spring and drive shaft company. They may even be able the repair your existing driveshaft.
Yeah, I’ve thought about that route. Haven’t ruled it out yet. My concern at this point is the apparent rarity of my setup that I can’t easily find a replacement. I’ve thought about having mine repaired, a new one made, or getting one of the longer ones and cutting it down and having a driveshaft shop weld and balance. But should this happen again, I’m likely in the same boat. If changing the transfer case gets me to a more common driveshaft, then I won’t have to worry so much.

Might be cheaper to keep a spare driveshaft.

Or, if you get setup to make your own, you can make as many as you want.

I’d keep a spare driveshaft if I could find some. I don’t have a shop and room for what I have now and I’m sure it would probably be cheaper to buy a transfer case and a couple driveshafts than the tools to build driveshafts

I was mostly joking about the making a driveshaft thing.

mostly.

It would take a few decades to do it, but you could build a forge, right. Use the forge to build you own lathe out of cast iron. Make your own aluminum billet out of old beer cans……

While your going through all this trouble, you could just build a whole new truck from scratch.

Sometimes I feel like that’s what I do…

and a forge and real anvil is on my want list and has been for a long time…

Why not just change the U-joint ?

I dont think it would be that crazy to make your own driveshaft...maybe not forge the metal, but repurpse other driveshafts.

All you would really need besides cutting and welding is one those jigging tables that rotate the workpiece for you as you weld, and maybe a balancer and some weights.

When the joint detonated, it blew the ears on the driveshaft out at least a quarter inch on each side. Didn’t break them, surprisingly, but it sure bent them. I used a torch, hammer and some other tools, straightedge and an old joint to get it back reasonably close to spec. The one hole was rather oversized so I had to shrink it as best I could. Hammered a new joint in, but I don’t really trust it as more than a spare
