Now that my grieving process is complete for my old Ranger that has gone to the big junk yard in the sky after 20yrs, I'm starting to look for another. It is time to move on.... ;)

I've been keeping my eye on CraigsList in my local area and a few have popped up in the last few weeks that fit what I'm looking for.

One is an '06 with 59k miles, and one is an '08 with 81k miles.
Same truck though- same engine, same body, same interior package.

The asking price for the '08 (asking $7200) is cheaper than the '06 ($8400) but it would be a 5hr drive each way to check it out.

That got me thinking, if everything else is the same, how much is 2yrs less age is worth?
How much is 20k less miles worth?

Don't know quite yet.

Let's just assume both are from private sellers, probably as is.

Go with the 06. It's not that big of a difference.

Plus think of it this way, the typical person puts on 10k miles per year. That 08 has 2x the amount of expected miles.

I'd go look at the '06 and try to talk them down if you like it. If you don't, move on to the '08.

It depends where you are but here in the rust belt the newer vehicle is always the better choice. The bodies turn to rust a long time before the motors are half way worn out.

One with less miles... if it was for me that's what I'd choose, but I put on higher than average miles.

To me it is a wash. The prices look like they are reflective of the age/ mileage, and both trucks will be out of the factory warranty, so that is a wash. If the dealer throws a warranty in, that might make the difference. I think most aftermarket warranties go to 100k, so that would put the 06 on the plate.

the one thing that I would also consider is the tread life of the tires. I paid 700 bucks for a set of 31" tires for my ranger a few years ago...and both of them could have worn tires at those mileages.

If you plan on keeping it a long time I would go for the lower miles. I do not care how new my truck is as long as it gets me from point A to point B every time.
