My Ranger (1994) has different keys for the door and ignition. Is this common to all Rangers? The ignition key also locks the glove box. I know that some Ford passenger cars had a separate key for the trunk, but ignition and doors were usually the same key. I'm just wondering if maybe at some point (prior to my owning the vehicle) the lock cylinders on the door were changed. Not really important, just curious. I'd rather have just one key.

Yes, this is common up to and including 94. In 95 when Ford redesigned the interior they also changed the ignition lock cylinder design so that the door key also fit the ignition key. You can go to your local autoparts store and get a key set for a 95-97 ranger. Ebay should have them as well...

I bought my 83 Ranger in 84 and I had a key for the inginition and a key for the door lock. That is the way it was then. My next 2 Rangers (95 and 99) had a one key to open and start the truck. The old chip key.

This was common on earlier trucks, but definitely not since at least '93 (same key works the door and ignition on my '94).

My '90 BII has the two separate keys though (door key is round, ignition key is square).

I actually have 4 keys to my truck and it gets somewhat annoying lol one for the topper the ignition the glove box and the doors lol

my 88 only needs one key. ignition cylinder is broke and doesn't need the key to start it, so i only use my door key haha

You are younger than 20, aren't you.

Up until we bought my wife's Escape I had NEVER owned a vehicle that had less than two keys.

My parent's '94 Explorer only had one key...

One of the things on my to-do-list is to put later door cyliders in my Ranger and convert it to one key. It is a long list though...

Ha! Younger than 20? I wish I hadn't wasted so many of those days! Nah, I'm a ripe old 30.

Thanks for the responses. I just wasn't sure how common this was in Rangers, since the only other Rangers I've driven used a single key. The only other vehicles I've driven that used two keys were Ford passenger cars (pre-90's). Even my '78 F-250 had only one key for both doors and ignition. Oh well.

My 94 came with a single key as well as my fiancees 93 Ranger. My parents brand new 73 Ford LTD wagon only had 1 key for doors & ignition & another for the tailgate & glove box. And my 76 F250 had a seperate key only for the glove box.

For some vehicle like Honda's that get stolen more often it would be a theft deterent is the doors where different from the ignition

Haaaaa....you get what you pay for....lol. The more toys, the more keys!! Just think if you added a tool box in the truck....another key...lol

:icon_rofl::icon_rofl:

My B4000 is the same way, I assumed it was because the steering column turned out to be from Pick n' Pull, since the '93 Ranger I used to have only had one key for everything.
