Hi all, I have an '01 4.0 sohc ranger and I'm planning on turning it into a fun ride for no particular purpose. Just a cool thing to cruise around and maybe take to the track once and a while just to see how well it can do without doing an engine swap. I was wondering if anyone had any info on building a twin turbo set up for a 4.0 litre without just shoving the exhaust out the hood. I know it's a bit of a long shot and it would take a lot of time and money but I came to terms with that before I even started. Any info anyone has would be very helpful. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Do it.

Is this the best way to make a tt work? My biggest concern is how far the turbos are from the manifold and how that might affect boost pressure. A set up like this is something I hadn't considered, so I'm greatly appreciative for opening that door. I was wondering if I might by some chance be able to use any 3.5 parts to make the choice of parts a little simpler.

There's a thousand different ways to skin this cat.. the BEST way is the option that you can afford.

$3k gets you a blower & install kit.. more or less bolt on ready.. we have a few members who have gone that route with their 4.0s..

My biggest thing is that I don't want to shove the exhaust out the hood. I want it to look good, perform well. I've seen a couple kits for supercharging but I'm pretty dead set on running a TT setup. A thought occurred to me today that I might be able to weld on 3.5 exhaust manifold ends from the y-pipe side to a 4.0 exhaust manifold and *maybe* find a way to route the intake and exhaust piping using mostly 3.5 parts.

Here's a unfinished thread on the subject.
Maybe you can use some of the info. Maybe you can contact the OP and see if he finished.

I wouldn't bother trying to use 3.5 parts honestly.

A set of custom forward facing "log" manifolds could be made to hold a couple turbos.. relatively easy too..

☝️☝️☝️ like those.. put some vbands or t3 flanges on the end..

Will require rearranging of accessories and other crap in the engine bay.. might be able to keep the mech fan..

just invert headers.

I wonder if you flip the manifolds and run some Borgwarner k04 or k24 turbos how it would fit? They are small and easy to fit and I think they would make good power especially down low so it would be a blast to drive. I know my 2.7 Audi is around 400 on k04 turbos so it might work in a ranger if you have supporting mods. I have been thinking about this with my 3.0 but it would depend on what supporting mods I can get.

I was thinking along the lines of German or Japanese turbos for the setup. I was originally planning on flipping some headers around to face forward but Blmpkn has a good idea with block hugger manifolds.

Yeah the hugger manifolds look like a good route for maximizing space savings and easy to weld the flange to. I think the k24 Porsche 996 turbos would be good considering it’s a 3.6 and makes 425hp stock. If you get used stock B5 S4 manifolds you could cut the turbo flanges off and weld them to the block hugger manifolds. Might be able to find some weld flanges for sale by themselves even. I have been thinking about doing something along this route but I would want to have forged rods and pistons with enough ring gap personally. Probably some valve springs as well. I think this combination and Megasquirt sounds like fun. Mines a 3.0 though so I don’t know if I can get there with what I have, but I have been thinking about it for a while now just need to research rod and piston specs and valvetrain.

I'm only somewhat confident in my 4.0 bottom end, but I don't plan on keeping it stock forever. I might run the TT setup for a little while at lower boost or until it blows up and I have an excuse to get a better block from super6 or tom morana with the stage 3 heads and cam it.

Yeah I think lower boost around 300hp would be a good target. I read that the 3.0 in my ranger has forged steel rods so I am curious if the 4.0 is similar? Maybe some ARP hardware and more ring gap will be enough along with valve springs. I think this combination along with Megasquirt would get the job done on 3.0 or 4.0. I still have more to learn about Ford engines though so we’ll see.
