just picked up an 87 ranger 2.9 efi v-6. whe i went to look at it it firered right up and drove well. Prev. owner had it from 1990 on with 44000 on it it has 110000 on it now. I picked it up two days later got in it fired Right up. today I go to get in it wont start turns over good but wont catch. Got fule psi at the bar not quite sure how to test the IMC as i did pull that wire off and theres a good ware mark on it. not overly truck mecanical myself but have also read the tfi could be bad. Help on what my next step should be?thanks

Repalced the wire with the ware mark with a new one--- center wire on the distributer to the ignition coil and the did it!!!:yahoo::yahoo: Truck started right up! Will be changing all the wires shortly, cap and rotor... Plugs look really bad and rusted. Only other issue is temp gauge is not working all other items on panel are good just not the temp and I know from reading on the site Heat is the WORST thing for the 2.9. any Ideas going to serch fourms now thanks!

Cool give it a complete tune up now, wires, PCV, breather filter, air and fuel filters that way you know where you stand as far as preventative maint stuff. The temp sending unit is the single wire on the thermostat housing the two wire is for the computer. clean the connector and crimp the end so it fits tite on the sending unit and see if that works. If not take the wire to the sending unit and touch it to ground with the key on the guage should read hot. If so the sending unit is bad. In the tech library is a section on testing the charging system make sure it passes both the no load and load tests and the battery is fully charged before you do the tests

Yep that was the wire traced it back and pinched it, it was loose thank-x! got new wires oil filter hoses, rad flush snd anti frezee, new t stat and heater hoses. Man that distributer looks like fun to get at:icon_confused:but I got small hands so maybe ill get lucky. gotta get dis and roter. Plugs are rusted right up:sad: hope I don't break one Has a new tank and internal pump so good there. thanks guy's much aprciated!:D
