Turbo on a 2.3 litre


Well after all the talking about the turbo build i decided to do a total motor rebuild do it the right and proper way...:icon_thumby:
 
Good for you. The saying "do it right the first time and only cry once" really applies in this situation...
 
hmmm. maybe ill just go pull in the internals out of that engine instead of paying for the entire engine... the cranks and connecting rods are the same between the turbo engines and 94 and down rangers correct? the rangers rods were not changed until 95 if i remember correctly. so should i pull only pistons or pistons and rods and crank? wut else would be good to pull? im pulling injectors for sure though.
 
go for pistons and rods, you don't need a different crank.
 
Yeah I can't remember when the ranger started using the weak rods. I want to say 95 but I could be wrong. I know my 90 had the same part number as the turbo rods in it.
 
i alrdy have my oil system ran i just wanna go with the easier route here and still be able to drive my truck but i think im just going to have to wait until winter to pull my motor and then just build it up from there with the internals out of the TC. i also had another idea, workin in a diesel shop... theres many high performance parts just laying around... i was thinking taking forged billet pistons from my shop that can hold up to 130 psi boost in a diesel motor and bore my motor out to fit that..... problems... custom crank would have top be made to connect to these pistons.... then i would run like 100000000 psi boost..... LAYAAHAHHAA woo! thats a fun ride.
 
That might work if:
1. They were close enough to the right diameter that you could safely overbore them to fit.
2. The resulting compression ratio is between 7.5:1 and 9:1.
3. You could find a rod that fits both the piston and your crank.
4. The new pistons aren't too long, resulting in a rod that is simply too short to hold up. (generally diesel pistons are much longer than gas pistons)

Why do that when stock turbo pistons are cheap and hold up to 400 HP just fine? After that, aftermarket pistons are available that will hold more horsepower than it would take to bend the crank or blow the head of the block?
