I've had the truck exactly 4 years and it just went over 100K miles. A few weeks ago I was checking oil and cleaning battery posts and under the dirt I discovered a K&N sticker. Never have cleaned the air filter in 4 years. I feel bad for neglecting, but I have just taken it in and had oil changed, etc. never doing any maintenance myself except for a brake job and shocks about two years ago. Oil change guys never said anything but I wouldn't expect them to. I'm the owner so I should know that it has K&N filter in it...
So, yesterday I started by seafoaming the intake and then while the truck was cooling down from my 10 minute drive, I replaced air filter (oh my God! Crusty on the bottom side), cleaned MAF, IAC, TB (filthy as you could imagine), new fuel filter, and then installed new Autolite Iridium plugs and Autolite Premium Wires.
By the way, the passenger side of the engine is the devil. I look and feel today like I spent yesterday fighting a mountain lion. Every step of the removal and installation of plugs and wires on that side left me bleeding in new places and bruised. I did jack up that side and remove tire and splash guard to access those three plugs from under there. The front two were staring me right in the face but that back one had to be found by feel mostly. The first two hours were removing and replacing that one alone. The other two turned out not to be much easier because of no space and stubbornness. Factory plugs and wires were permanently frozen together and no room to use plug wire pliers. It was brutal and then I still had the driver's side. Luckily the driver's side was a breeze, comparatively speaking, and only took about an hour.
Can't wait to see how she runs now since she was running pretty good before all this. For you owners thinking about doing this on your 4.0, just be prepared for really tight spaces and if you have large hands and arms like me, you will probably need some bandages and a lot of patience. Good luck!
