if it's the starter that seems to be the problem, especially with it going in and out, but not turning, hit it with a hammer, see if that gets it started... not hard, but a 2/10 wack, a good wrist action hitting... if someone taps on it while someone else turns the key from on to start a few times, often (50/50) the starter will kick in... it's only good a few times, it is in no way a permanent fix, but if you gotta get home, it does work...
FWIW, btw, you can touch both the positive and negative posts on a 12v car battery, without hurting you... its when you short it out with metal that things go boom... same goes with the positive wire on the starter, if you didn't disconnect the battery (which i hope you do anyways) and your arm touches the frame or something (which is a ground) you won't get zapped... but if the positive cable touches the frame, it can turn almost instantly to liquid and drip on you, which will leave permanent scars...
btw my buddy's name is Kalin, doubt you and your husband would have met many other Kalins, lol he's married now, with 2 kids, not sure if that would help... i don't think they had their first when they were in borden
