Truck won't start!

If you want to throw a new starter in that won't hurt and may solve the problem...but I've had starters sound like they were pooched only to find out that the wire wasn't connected tight enough on the starter...

If the guy was a mechanic he probably has an idea about it, but French mechanics...well, most Canadian Rangers are bi-lingual so it's probably the same "thingy" in both languages...

I'm not available till Wednesday and hope to be in Cookstown that day...if it isn't fixed by then I can come up and have a look and if it needs a new starter we can pick one up...but you might want to call around to see about price and availability first...I know CTC stocks quite a few parts for these and they may have it in stock or you can ask them to order one in for you...it only takes an hour or so with their inventory system to get one to Barrie...unless there is a store in Angus that sells parts (not familiar with it other than the Dollar Store and Mikey D's)...

They might even give you something back for the casting...

Yep there's an auto store in Angus that I'll try and I'll call around.

He said there were some wires under neath that aren't on very well but didn't know where they were coming from and he would have to trace them back. I'm around all week now that I don't have anything to drive! If you're near by I'll be here. I think I'm hoping for some sort of miracle that it's just a wire since I'm pretty sure the starter is about 2 years old.

He also said my break line in the front was cut which was suuuper nice to hear since they're brand new.

Well, brake lines are not that hard to do...need a bleeder kit (that I have) and can replace the brake line if needed also...have to have a look at it to know what it needs though...

If he sees wires that are loose that could be all that's wrong with it...a two year old starter that has otherwise been working shouldn't wonk out...but...

I'm in Beaverton tomorrow pretty much all day (if it doesn't rain like it's supposed to)...but Wednesday is good for me if needed...I will PM you with contact information...

Sounds good. I found a place with a starter for $120 that I can get if I need to. The EME guy can instal it if that's what it needs. I friggin hope it's wires and you are some sort of wire magician.

:icon_confused: What kind of response is this ?? 92NHranger was trying to be helpful & looked to be promising. Please keep your "Heightened Awareness" to a minimum AND post your "trolly moods" elsewhere :icon_thumby: -

my trolly moods? which trolly moods, the one i was in when i used the word please, several times? who exactly do you think you are? yes, he was trying to help, i get that, yet, when several people are telling one person to do different steps in a diagnostic process, neither one typically gets done correctly, which puts the whole system farther back... would you want two people telling you to do two contradictory things when you're trying to learn something new? why don't you go take your "Holier than Thou" attitude and disappear... i don't need you telling when i can and can't post, especially when i have never done anything but help people in any of the technical sections...

if i was trying to be a dick to nhranger, i would have called him a retard and that he had no idea what he was talking about, or i would have worded my reply similar to this one here

there is a system that works in these sections, you might not have realized this, but when there is a process being worked through, you are not to be jumping into the middle of it to change it up... if you think you know better, wait until the first person gives up, or asks for help... sorry if my politely worded "trolling" didn't explain that to you well enough or you could PM the first person, in this thread, ADSM, and offer your help to them...

MKams, i have to ask, is your husband stationed in Borden, or is he doing his AF training?

I will see if I can find my pointy hat, cape, and wand...but I think it just needs a bolt...

I had a friend stationed at Borden years ago...I was under the impression from him that it was mostly driver training (this was 1970s) and infantry grunts...but he bailed early and was killed in a ski doo accident before I could get the skinny on his military career...and that was before they merged to the Canadian Forces...anyway, if we have time maybe you can fill in the blanks...

Now, correct me of I'm wrong, but Borden is the main training hub of all af trades, and only is minimally functional as an actual base

Sent from somewhere naughty!

Yes it is a very large training base now, Air Force and some army.

There is one tactical helicopter squadron, where we are part of a different base but have a unit here. They're used for training and missions, although now it's being switched to large maintenance for the Griffons. (This is our unit) My husband is on this forum when he's not off dinking around on helicopters. He knows more about that stuff.

There are all kinds of fun things here! Slightly off topic..but apparently the mechanics aren't that smart as I had two guy friends come over last night and look at the truck. The one guy found the frayed wire for the starter in about 2 seconds flat. So much for trusting our Forces mechanics. Lets hope he doesn't work on tanks...

So, did that fix the problem? A frayed wire will do it every time...replacing the wire is usually a simple task, but finding it can, well, require you to "use the Forces"...but not their mechanics...

It should be easy enough to simply replace the frayed cable...and much cheaper than a new starter...that probably won't help in this situation...

I have to find a wire and find someone to replace it so I don't electrocute my self. I think one of our unit guys could do it pretty easily and maybe steal some wire from the hanger. Maybe my truck will fly that way!

Breaking each individual system down into pieces is a very easy way to learn them, and diagnose when have a problem similar to your's.

Just unhook the neg on the battery, you wont hurt anything with a 12v circuit.... just dont lick the wire haha.

From my days at working at a parts store near an AFB, many military mechanics have no idea how a car operates let alone know how to change a set of brakes... but i guess its a whole different environment. But I would still think they would be able to work through it using reasoning but who knows!

nah... from what i hear, the repairs on military vehicles are all pretty straight forward... most of it is electronic now, so it's replace components, one of my best friends is an AVN Tech, just made CPL, so he recently spent 2 years in borden, (i was set to go, but the recruiting office lost my application, dicked me around, and by the time i was merrit listed, the trade was filled... soured my taste for it, i didn't bother re applying... i would have been in borden right now had they done their job...)

anyways, my buddy works on the sea kings in esquimalt now, and was telling me that it's all super easy... the training is not really required to do his job, when something malfunctions, the on board computer system more or less tells him what part is worn/broken and which component to replace

^^ what this guy says!

what's your husband's name on here?

Okay sorry guys, we had a bit of a stressful weekend. So I had one of the base mechanic guys come by and take a look before I killed my self. He seems to think I need a new starter.

If anyone else is around here and wants to come take a look, be my guest! You can't always trust everyone. I guess I'll go try a new starter and let you know.

His way of explaining it to my small mind was "the thingy is going in and out but it's not turning around" (I think he may have also been French)

That was kinda what I was thinking too, but I wanted to get an easier test or two in before I guessed at a starter from 600 miles away.

It makes sense from what you have told us too.

I will for sure make sure to not lick any wires. I tried that as a kid and I can tell you it wasn't the best idea on the planet. I learned my lesson.

I wonder if we know your friend. It sounds like he may have been on course when we were here before about 3 years ago. We were in Comox BC after the AVN course and now back to Borden. Depending on the air craft, you may or may not need the training. The Buffalo is so old my husband REALLY needed the training for that one, but some are as easy as pushing some buttons on a computer. As far as I know the Griffon needs the mechanical help to function.

My husband is "Grover"..apparently. So he says. Please do not harass him about my lack of mechanical knowledge. It's not his fault I took auto shop 7 years ago and forgot everything. I fix people's brains, not vehicles.

I'll get the wires out and changed this week. I'm glad you guys are all such a big help. :) Maybe I'll try to learn me some car stuff so I can keep this sucker running on my own.
