My truck died on the road the other day because of a loss of electrical power. Now it will not start. I replaced the starter, but I still only get a single click. The starter seems to engage. I did a voltage test and seemed to get 12 volts to the starter and still it does not crank. I even tried direct power to the starter and still nothing. I am at a loss at this point any ideas.

Thanks
Justin

See if you can put a socket on the bolt inside the crank pulley and turn it over. It should turn over with moderate effort. If it doesn't take the belt off and take out all the spark plugs and try again. If it still doesn't you may have suffered the dreaded Cam Position Synchronizer failure. That is when the CPS drive gear mysteriously shears(wears off) all it's teeth. And that is the gear that drives the oil pump. Instant engine lock up - new motor time!
I really hope this did not happen to you. It just plain sucks!

Did you check the Starter Solenoid? Try jumping with a screwdriver from Battery Terminal to the Starter terminal (where the wire from the ignition switch is), not the actual starter cable.

I did try jumping the starter and that did not have any affect. I took the serpentine belt off and tried to start with no affect. I will try the crank pulley method tomorrow. I hope I did not fry my motor. But I have a bad feeling about this.

Also let me add it is a 99 Mazda B3000. 95000 miles

When the car died it was overheating, not on the temp gauge but when I opened the hood the radiator was boiling. I have never had a single problem before this.

This is starting to sound like something you do not want to hear.............:bad:

In your original post you said it died because of an electrical problem. Are you sure it was electrical and not overheating?

If it was overheating then you may as well start looking for another motor.

The first and foremost thing you should do now is grab a 1/2" drive ratchet and a deep 22mm socket or whatever size bolt it is on the crankshaft, and see if you can turn the engine over. Try turning it clockwise first and if "no dice" try counterclockwise. It should'nt be that hard to turn but you will feel force on the compression stroke. You don't really need to remove the plugs in order to turn it over, it's much easier to grab a cheater bar.

My original thought was that it was an electrical problem because it would not turn over when I tried to start it. It did not cross my mind that the car would die because the engine was frozen.

Words cannot express my anger and frustration at this point, so I will not say the words I am thinking. I did try to turn my crank shaft and yes it is frozen.

Does anybody have advice as to what to do at this point. I have never replaced a motor before and I don't plan on doing it my self but I do have a couple of questions.

Can I put the 4.0L v6 instead of the 3.0 there seems to be plenty of room in the engine compartment but I do not know if I would need to by extra computer equipment or other various stuff that makes it more difficult than it used to be before the modern age of engines.

Also I want to thank you guys for helping me with this.

Is this something I should take to a dealership to have fixed or should I take to some mechanic that specializes in engines? I am new the town I live in so I have no mechanic I can trust.

Check with the local junk yards. Sometimes they will get you a decent motor and install it.
Where are you at? Maybe someone from these boards can help you somehow.

When '99 went, I got a 2000 motor with 67000 miles for $700. But, as a precaution, I replaced the O'2s, clutch, and all the tune up stuff. It took me and a friend wth a nice garage about 20hours total (we didn't work hard at it)

If you swap to a different engine, you'll need to swap the transmission too. No other engine has the same bolt pattern as the 3.0

I'm sorry to hear that, maybe I can help if you live close by.

Yeah -

So I took the truck to a shop and they want around $5000 total to fix it. With the price of the engine is about $2400 and there they mentioned a bunch of other tune up parts they were going to add as well. That really is not an option to me.

This really puts me in a bad spot. Anyway thanks again for the help.

$5000???

Hahaha there smoking crack over there, anyways if your not able to do it your self and the locals shops are greedy basterds try looking for and auto tech class that would be willing to do it. There in it to learn and not for the money, and on somthing like an engine swap im pretty sure the instructor would put his better studends on it instead of some goons.

Dude!

I can buy a complete running motor out here for like $400 bucks!

You definitely need to shop around a bit.
