I am trying to get a spare key made. Ford wants $125 for a key and to program it. All I need is a door key incase the fiancee locks her key in the truck (again)

I went to wally world and they told me that taking the truck key and even cutting a regular door key from it would screw up the chip in the key?

Is that true? I am not going to start the truck with it, only unlock the door if I need to?

Please tell me I don't have to pay the dealers heating bill for a replacement key!

Well, I"m unsure about the screwing up the key part, but I just went to a local locksmith shop (called Mount's Lock & Key) and they made the key in their building and then they went outside and hooked up the handheld computer thing to the computer hook up in my truck and programmed it. It was about $50 IIRC. But they should be able to cut the key without it screwing up the chip in the original key. Hope this helps.

My experience with chipped Ford keys is this:

If you have two keys you just need to get a chipped key from the dealer (or elsewhere if they have them) for about $25 and you can program the new third key yourself. Instructions are in the owners manual.

When you only have one chipped key is where the fun begins. You MUST go to the dealer because they have to use Ford's computer to program the new key and the whole process takes around 30 to 45 minutes at $75 an hour or whatever they charge for labor. Learned this the hard way on the Ranger I had before. When we bought my wife's Taurus (used) at the same dealer, they only had one key. Our intrepid consumer was alert and noticed this and asked the dealer to make another key for free before we took the car home.

You CAN get any old key cut but it will only work on the doors and not start the vehicle.

You show to have any 89 Bronco II, that doesn't have a chip key.

Now if you or your fiancee' have a 98 or newer Ford, then yes it does.

Yes, it does take 30 minutes to program it, so that fee will be 1/2 of their hourly labor rate.

98-2002 I believe are like this:
ROTUNDA011-R0164.jpg

$20 + $35 to program it + tax...........

2003-current like this:
ROTUNDA011-R0475.jpg

$27 + $35 to program it + tax...........

You can get a basic door key for $2.50 + tax and DON'T EVER accidently stick it in the igniton, or it could set off the anti-theft system......which will require the computer to be reprogrammed.

GOOD LUCK and hope this helps!!!

It will not screw up the chip, i have done it many times with no problem. I work at an auto parts store and have never had one come back.

Yep sorry, it is for a 1999 ranger. It is a bone XL truck, but it has the THEFT system.. Weird..

Anyway, I went and had two keys cut. I tested and the one they used to cut it still starts the truck..phew....

However, every once in a while the original key would have to be jiggled to unlock the door. The new cut keys have the be jiggled quite a bit before they unlock it, but they do work. Is there something I can file down?

I have the original, or one of the original 'ford' logo keys and the teeth for lack of a better word on it are quite worn down and are almost smooth, but it still unlocks and starts the truck fine.

Therefore I think I could file the edges down a little on the door keys to make them work better?

take the key back to them and have them buff it more with that little wire brush they have. tell them what u told us and they should do it for free.

Have 2 regular keys made. Then just place the chipped key near the steering column and you should be good to go.

I've seen people do this before, but they have taken the original key and put it in the cover for the steering column. I have installed remote starts that needed the pass key so the vehicle would run. I just tape it to the inside bottom part of the column cover.
