i just bought a 96 rangers and when i shut it off it constantly beeps untill i get the key in a certain place and remove it slowly. it also starts with out the key does this mean i just need a new ignition

does it have an aftermarket cd player w/ theft option? i had a deck or two w/ it and they would beep a few times and quit when the key was turned off meaning the theftlock was activated. sonys and pioneers are two major culprits of this.

He said it also starts without the key.
It seems you have a problem with the IGNITION SWITCH. No matter what aftermarket cd player / entertainment thing you have in your truck.

The ignition cylinder in my '96 is wore out, dose the same thing. A new cylinder is only about $15 to $20 and it takes less then 5 mins to change.

In my case of owning the truck for almost a year I still haven't changed mine out, my lazy side gets the best of me. I did unclip the the black wire the detects that the key is in the ignition to stop it from beeping.

yep, you need an ignition lock cylinder. its an easy job, if you dont have the tilt wheel its even easier. youll need to remove the two screws that hold the column cover on and then using a piece of coat hanger wire, locate the 1/4" hole on the underside of the lock cylinder and turn your key two clicks forward. insert the wire and push on it with some force as you pull the keys outward. the lock cylinder should come out easily but a little wiggling may be required. if you have the tilt wheel you just need to do more work to remove the column cover and you need to put a sharp bend in the coat hanger to clear the cover that stays on the column.
