Just for starters, this is for OFF-ROAD use only....

Here's the story;

My Bronco II has a smog pump that has been recently making a LOT of noise; noisier every few days... I've been searching local junkyards for a smog pump, but NONE had any (I live in Colorado, and there's limited junkyards in the mountains)..

SO:

I've heard of the smog pump delete, where you basically just get the same belt that runs the power steering pump-- take off the smog pump-- and just run a shorter belt.. Re-connect the hoses that were going to the smog pump, to each other, so the air still circulates.

I removed my smog pump, my belts fit perfectly... But when I try starting my truck, I get an 'EMISSIONS' light on the dash, and the engine just does a single 'click.'

What did I do wrong?

I thought this was a simple process.

If I can't get this sorted out by Monday, I lose my job.

From the left to the right.. Smog pump, and two adapters that were on the line. I disconnected a single line (looked like a wire, but was hollow) from the center piece.

Here is a photo of it:

HERE is what the system now looks like; it is IDENTICAL to one that I saw on a few other cars... Can't figure out what is wrong, here.

Please respond! Please help me keep my job!

That is a vac line. Did you plug it?

There should be two vacuum lines coming off the adapters: One is a diverter valve...pushes air to either the cat or exhaust manifolds; the other is a filter, I think. The two vacuum lines should be plugged, but not sure how they'll affect the computer.

Two hoses come off the diverter valve...again one to cat, other to exhaust. Each hose should clamp onto one way valves. You may need to plug these as well to keep air from drawing into cat or exhaust.

Also, you should still be able to pick up a reman pump from AutoZone or advanceauto for about $40, maybe more...

The emissions light is unrelated, it's just set on a timer.

Working in that area, you were pretty close to the starter relay. I'd track back the positive cable and make sure the starter switch wire didn't get disconnected.

I would have gone with a remanufactured pump. With the divertors, when working, the pump is always pushing air. With a cold engine, the air gets dumped through the bypass valve with the filter. As the engine warms up, the air gets outputted into the exhaust manifold. As the engine gets fully warmed up, the air is sent to the catalytic convertor.
