I doubt there are any old timers like myself that has not been burned by a trouble light with the incandescent light. and always burning out at the worst possible time.

Then they came out with rough service bulbs. Take a slight hit and still will burn your skin.

Spiral fluorescent bulbs - cooler but easily damaged. Have coated ones but doesn't seem to help much.

wondering if the make a rough service LED bulb? Almost seems to be the answer if they could stand up to vibration but they are costly

I feel your pain brother.

I do think LED is the answer, but it will be a while until cost goes down. I have seen some actual fluorescent tube trouble lights (basically a 10 inch wand) that have the tube completely encased that look like they will take a bit more of a beating, but I have never looked into buying them because I have a perfectly good working trouble light with a spiral fluorescent bulb in it....

maybe if I can find an LED that puts out 75 or more watts of equivalent light (to an incandescent) and if it is under 20 bucks, I might splurge and grab one and try it out...

I have a Craftsman one that is all LED and the worst thing I have to say about it so far is that it's a pain to cycle through the three settings and back to off by repeatedly hitting the power button.

Also, it's cordless.

Cap lights, or work in full daylight.

I put a 40 watt equivalent (seems brighter than that) LED in mine. Got a two pack at ACE hardware for 5.99 on some kind of instant rebate deal. Stays cool and I haven't broke it yet!

I have a cordless one from Mac (that isn't a Mac) that I love. I think it was about $80 but it works great and a charge seems to last forever.
