I was trying to removed he flexplate on my 2000 4.0 tody and was having some trouble trying to find something to fit on the bolts were well. They are the weird 3/8" 6 point star looking bolts and I cannot seem to find anything to fit really well. Anyone know what exactly these are called? Is there a special socket to remove them? or do I just try again with a 3/8" 12 pt socket on an impact gun? thanks.

Well I'm not exactly sure, but I would not recommend using an impact gun especially with a 12 pt socket on a 6 pt bolt. Anyway to fit a breaker bar in there? You'd be able to control the torque better.

Sounds like a torq head bolt. The sockets for them are available at any tool store.
