Trouble engaging

Had a customer of mine work on a ranger today. same problem as everyone else. turns out the pilot bearing was bad in that one.

Interesting... Wouldn't that cause some noise? (also I wouldn't think the trans would go into gear after holding it for a couple seconds either).

maybe this is the problem with mine. i have a hard time going into first at a stop. sometimes while downshifting to second it'll grind. and when im driving as the rpms climb and im about to shift i'll hear a chirping noise. also when i down shift or let off the gas you hear a faint rattle(may not actually be faint as i have a cherrybomb and compared to that everything sounds faint lol)

edit: also recently when i (but not often) shift in to first from a stop and let off the clutch it'll buck and bog a little bit and then make a popping noise after that it drives normal through every other gear

I'd be hesitant to blame that one on the fluid. Having the wrong fluid in there merely would cause it to be hard to shift. No strange noises (other than the chunking into gear during a shift) should be present.

I'd say that one may actually be the clutch or a mechanical problem inside the trans.

I had 280,000 on my '88 Ranger 2.3 tranny before the pilot bearing failed. Clutch, tranny and hydraulics were still good but had trans rebuilt and replaced the rest at the same time.
