Not exactly an off road adventure, and not even a Ranger Road Trip, since five people with luggage is too much to fit, even in an extended cab, but the we wrapped up a trip to NH Sunday in our 2006 Expedition XLT. It's easily the nicest vehicle either my wife or i have ever owned. Very well suited for road trips. Room for the kids to stretch out a bit and snooze, a good ride, and acceptable audio/video options.
Carrying my wife and I and our youngest three girls (adoption approved by the court yesterday - YAH!!!) with luggage for a week and a roof mounted cargo box, we averaged 17.6 MPG over 3139 miles (mostly highway, of course), which was better than I had expected. Interstate speeds were 70-75 MPH, with good weather, fairly light traffic, and only a half dozen or so construction zones.
Being back up there got me in the mood to explore a bit and I did attempt one familiar logging trail, but I got too much disapproval from my wife to continue...probably for the best.
A good trip and a good visit with family. My father in law is 85 and still getting around pretty well. Out to the farm every morning where he works his horse some, dragging downed trees out of the woods and cutting them up for firewood. Seems that kind of work mindset is getting harder to find. Darn shame.
Stopped in southern NH on the way home and stayed the night with my younger brother and his family. Older brother was travelling for work, so didn't get to see him.
I'll post a few pics tomorrow and maybe have a few more details.
