tricks to squeeze out a few more MPG?

I use 3rd gear for 30-40mph, 4th for 40-50mph, 5th for 55mph and up. Just how I do it.. Get 17 Mpg with a 2.9 V6... On the freeway/highway. About 16 in town. Not sure how much different the 4cylinders are from the V6's... My tachometer isn't accurate.. So I couldn't tell you what RPM's I run at..

I roll with 1st 1-5, 2nd 5-15, 3rd 15-30, and if on roads, 4th 30-50 but try to stay in 5th unless theres a hill coming up, then I preemptively downshift and gain momentum. Adjusting for throttle cable slack helps alot too.

Haha. You sure about that? Like I said, this isn't my first rodeo. Besides, why don't you get back on topic and help the guy with his question instead of argue with me. That's not what this thread is about.
well i just dont like people feeding people false information.

What have I said that's false? You're just wasting my time now. Take it for what it is. That's all. You clearly have no experience in any of this which is why you haven't added any of your own advice. It's gains for free. I don't have anything to prove to you. I obviously understand it better than you. That's it.

all your saying is you understand it better but have nothing to back up that claim with? regardless, maybe with a high performance vehicle there are gains to be made but with a dd like a ranger, the gains are not high enough to notice. sure years ago i've done stuff similar to what you've suggested and literally nothing made me say "wow, i have more power than i did before these mods." I'm just talking from my own experience

Cats in themselves are a restriction. Clogged ones are even more of a restriction. Hence why I said you would gain power and mileage. And a higher flowing muffler doesn't only make it louder. Sometimes, that's true. But not always. Removing restrictions on the intake and exhaust allows the engine to run more efficiently. I'm just helping the guy with what he asked to know. I never said he had to listen to me about the cats. That's also why i asked what his emissions regulations are. Around here its 25 years and older don't need emmissions. And some places dont have them at all. And moderators don't like suggestions like that? Haha. There's a lot more illegal stuff on this site then just cutting out the cats.

Modern vehicles with efi are made from the factory to run with a cat. The easiest way (and unless I'm wrong the only way) to make an engine more FUEL efficient is to make the stock form run as best as possible. The back pressure is needed thats why the car has it built in. Please take rumors and speculation else where, you are not telling the facts.

For example I bought my truck without a cat and saw a 2 mpg increase when I had it reinstalled.

Rumors? Who's starting rumors? You guys have some real big egos. Just because I don't have a ton of posts doesn't mean I don't know. You guys are making fools of yourselves by calling me out for a suggestion made. I never said you would gain a massive increase in power and mileage. If you want me to start throwing down numbers I can. My truck: after TM headers gained a good 40 ft. Lbs. Torque and about 4 mpg's. This is because it FLOWS better. It's not rocket science. Now I have no cats and I will get it dynoed again. Look at diesels and many other cars. Cats are a restriction to capture micro carbons to keep emmisions down. That is their only purpose. Not create back pressure to increase the performance of your engine. Try blowing through a little straw and then a big straw. The bigger one is easier because its less restrictive making it more efficient for you to blow through it. Normally I wouldn't care about what you guys have to say. It's just a website. But you guys are wrong

What do you want pics of? You guys are kind of ass holes. Everytime someone makes a suggestion, that's right, you feel like you have to prove them wrong even though youre the ones that are wrong. I can attach pictures of my dyno slip once I find out how to post them. It's guys like you that ruin these forums and make nobody want to be a part of them.

Well to chime in here diesels have cats, and a 40ftlbs gain from headers is a lot of bull shit. That would equate to roughly a 60 horsepower gain. Again I smell some loads of bull.

A cat is not restrictive unless it is clogged. And a cat and the metals and catalysts inside are formulated will only clog if your motor is running extremely rich. I have seen measurements of exhaust flow with a clogged cat, no cat and a new cat. The difference between no cat and a clean cat is less then .1 cubic feet per second. And you will never guess, it was the clean cat that had the better flow rate! Sucks having someone with family that works for both ford and magnaflow with engendering degrees prove you wrong doesn't it

I never said diesels don't have cats so don't know where you got that. If you cut them out you will notice a dramatic increase in mileage on certain rigs. Also never 60 HP gain so don't know where you got that either. I lost my dyno sheet. So you don't have to believe me. If I find it I will post it in a new thread. And have seen stock explorer 5.0 headers and how restrictve they are? I did really gain about 40 ft. lbs. I know the truth. Don't make remarks on something you don't know anything about. I think your full of bull saying a cat flows better than straight pipe. High flow cats obviously flow better than stock cats. But not as good as straight pipe. I don't care who has an engineering degree. I met some really dumb engineers before. A puece of paper doesn't change my mind. It's common sense. And I don't know how no one here can see that

I almost forgot that lifting the rear of your truck and removing your tailgate gains way more mileage. Haha

The formula for horse power is based from torque and 40ft lbs of torque at 5200 rpm equates to roughly 60hp that is proven science and your claim is almost unheard of. Bottom line here is what you suggest is illegal, and the mods frown upon that, your information is unfounded, and you have no idea when to admit your wrong and to stop arguing

I'm an ass cause I speak truth? I can live with that.
