Transmissions compatible?

Can I use a newer 95+ 4.0 transmission to replace my original 94 4.0 A4LD 2wd? would it just be bolt in? Or are they different lengths? I've done a ton of research and I still can't come to a conclusion. Same on the 3.0s, they have different bell housings and use a 3 bolt starter, could I just swap the housing to my 4.0 bell housing and bolt it together? Thanks in advance for advice

No, simple answer.

The backside of Bell housings on automatics is also the front section of the main pump in the transmission, you can swap bell housings but it would require disassembly of the whole transmission, and at that point you might as well just rebuild it unless the bell housing was physically damaged or the transmission case.

A4LD only had 1 or 2 control solenoids depending on the year, 1995+ automatics(like 4R55E) had 4 or 5 solenoids, plus a few extra sensors, so your pre-95 computer couldn't control the transmission.

And upgrading computer would mean a few other changes would be needed, more wiring and added sensors would be required.
Your '94 computer(EEC-IV) has 60 pin connection, 1995+ computer(EEC-V) has 104 pin connector, 44 more wires, although they are not all used :)

You said there's no simple answer but yet you gave me a simple answer , DONT try it! Ha I ended up buying a complete 94 with a bad engine that will hopefully be the junkyard I need it to be ! Convienence having it at the house with electric saws and air tools, instead of trying to grab one from the junk yard
