So I got a 94 ranger 4.0 2wd it had a A4ld transmission that went out on me I bought a rebuilt 4r55e trans and realized the wire plugs were different and there's a vacuum line on the A4ld not the 4r55e would it be possible to switch the internal parts for the 4r55e?

Also, the 4r55e is pcm controlled, completely different than the A4LD. I do not think you can swap the internals either.... I believe that 94 was the last year for the A4LD and in 95 they started using the Xr55e transmissions... I think the 4.0 got the 5r55e as well...

I think you are best off to sell the 4r55e and get a working A4LD transmission. you might be able to get the newer transmission working without the pcm, but your performance will probably take a hit. I will let the more intelligent than I members chime in on the subject...

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes, as said above you can not used the 4R or 5R series in a 1994 or earlier Ranger
You will need to rebuild your A4LD or find one, needs to be from/for a 4.0l engine and 2WD

Anything CAN be done, but the cost of doing it would be higher than getting the correct A4LD
Does the 4R have a speedometer cable output, it should, they were gone in 1998
You could get a 1996/7 Ranger 4.0l Computer and engine/trans wiring harness, and swap out 1994 computer and wiring
Add a CAM sensor and EGR system to your engine
That would be about the cheapest

You could get a stand-alone transmission computer, I think they run about $700

What manual transmission could work in it? It's just a beater pickup that I don't want to pour too much money into. Ive replaced transmissions here and there but never got a lot of education on them.

1990-1997 M5OD-R1 manual transmission from a 4.0l 2WD Ranger(or Mazda B4000) these years have speedometer cable hook up, 1998 and up do not
M5OD-R1(M5R1) has integrated bellhousing so you can't use an M5R1 from a 3.0l or 4cyl Ranger even though its the same "model" transmission, 2WD and 4x4 are not interchangeable

You also need
Fly wheel
Clutch/brake pedal assembly
Manual shift floor plate and boot
Clutch and master set
Rear drive shaft, matching your vehicle, i.e. regular cab or extended cab

Optional
Steering column from manual trans Ranger to get rid of column shifter
1993/1994 4.0l Manual trans computer, when you remove the automatic the computer will no longer "see" its solenoids or be able to control them so computer will turn on the CEL(check engine light) and it will just stay on....forever, you can still drive it, you just won't know if another problem occurs because CEL is already on, so you would need to read codes if engine started running bad, which you would do anyway

In my opinion, finding a working A4LD would be the least expensive option, unless you just really want a manual trans Ranger

There also appears to be one up here in Greer. I could go tomorrow and verify the transmission is there and what engine it has. Looks like LKQ would charge $136 + $30 core charge for a transmission.

Should have right motor, can't confirm transmission. I'd call and see if I could get a picture of the Federal sticker - then you would know the transmission.
