Transmission upgrade

So basically since my last rebuild I've been looking for a new transmission to replace my clunky m5od r-1. From day one I've had issues with this tranny and I thought a rebuild would change that. So has anyone done a fairly bullet proof tranny swap on the 4.0 sohc? I've looked at c4 and c6, T5, and a rebuilt 5r55e. Any know of some good options? I don't care if I lose 4wd because I don't use it hardly at all. This will have to take a beating out in the desert however.

A member on here a while back put the bulletproof NP435 behind his SOHC with a homemade bellhousing and slave setup. ....but it sounds like you already think the M5OD is "Clunky" so I doubt you want granny low and 20" shifter throw.

The M5OD is a good trans if you keep the proper fluid in it and don't try to drive it like a Mustang.

The newer synchros, and a short throw go a long way. I abuse the shit out of mine and its still kicking. I rebuilt a few with junk parts and learned my lesson. If you put a good set of bearings in them, they will last.
