So what types of manual or automatic transmissions would go with a 4.0L into or out of a '91 Ranger? I'm thinking of doing a transplant into my '86. Tying to get by as cheaply as possible since I'm on a fixed income.

The 2.9 or 4.0 M5OD are your only good options for a manual trans. The FM transmissions would break gears and hammer bearings behind the 2.9. The 4.0 will shred it without really having to try since it almost makes more power at idle than the 2.9 did at peak. Other engines are out since the 4-cyl and 3.0 bells are not compatible with the 4.0 pattern but have one-piece cases without removable bell.

The A4LD was the only auto trans from 86 to 94. If you just buy a whole running 90-92 Ranger you can rip everything out of it and just throw it all in your 86. Engine, trans, computer, dash and wiring. It will make the job all but plug and play.
