Transmission swap

Hi, I'm looking to change the engine on a 1994 B4000 4.0L 4X4. Since I've seen that in those years, the 3.0L V6 engine had a better mileage, I would like to change my 4.0L for the 3.0L. (I don't need the power of the 4.0L).

So here is my problem: I know that the transmissions for 3.0L and 4.0L have different ratio (in the three firsts gears accorfing to the technical library...). So, can I still put the 3.0L engine with the 4.0L transmission or I will have to find a 3.0L transmission?

Here are the ratios:

1991-2000 4.0L Ranger 5-Speed 3.40 / 2.05 / 1.31 / 1.00 / 0.79 (4.0L Engines)

1991 - Up 3.0L Ranger 3.72 / 2.20 / 1.50 / 1.00 / 0.79 (All Other Engines)

Acoording to what I see (correct me if I'm wrong...) I would simply get less tork in the three firsts gear...Would that be too hard on the clutch?

Thank you.

No, you can not use a 3.0L engine with a 4.0L transmission. The bellhouse patterns are entirely different. 3.0L's are their own animal. 2.9/4.0 share the same bellhouse pattern. If you are going with a 3.0L engine, you need to find a transmission from a 3.0L donor vehicle.

Yup to what ati190 said. Are you sure that the gas mileage difference between the 3.0L and 4.0L are worth the motor/tranny swap? I've never owned a 4.0L, but everything I have read says that they get equal, if not greater, gas mileage than 3.0L.

The 3.0 is capable of slightly better mileage than the 4.0
but capable doesn't equal "does"

Unless the 4.0 is dead there is no advantage to switching to another engine
chasing fuel mileage.

All right, I will have to find the hole kit! And yes Allan D, this was mt plan only if the 4.0L dies. (it's 280 000km now, so it's an upcoming possibility...).

Also, for the mileage, I read the numbers from the governement publication and it is supposed to be lower but be sure that if I do the swap, I will get some more info than governement stuff before I start looking for parts!

Thanks for all your tips.
