i have 91 ranger 4x4 with a 2.9 wonder if i can swap in a auto to replace the 5 speed metric 5 speed ive had it worked on this is the 3rd time thank you jerry vaughn

what are you doing you blow a manual trans with a 2.9. If you are abusing a manual and it goes out an auto is not going to be any better.

More specifically what keeps going out on the manual.

transmissiom swap

first time was reverse 2nd was 5th and im not sure on this time yet im a old man i baby this truck i know how weak the transmission is

the ranger A4LD is known for having more problems than the 5 speed manual, if your having to repair your transmission alot, it may be better to replace the whole unit with one from another truck

If you do decide to o auto, get a newer one that went behind a 4.0. They are stronger. I think there is a write up in the tech section about them.

thank you for all the info i wasnt sure about the automatics

The A4LD that would be appropriate to your truck is nowhere near as reliable as the M5OD that should currently be in it. It sounds like your trans came out the losing end of a previous owner.

The real catch to older power train assemblies, engines, transmissions, transfer cases, etc, is that to throw money at repairing a single failure generally is about as pointless as every thread on this board eventually becomes. In the long run it is generally far cheaper and easier to replace the whole assembly with a remanufactured unit that comes with a warranty since once you take it apart to fix the current failure something else is bound to break. Stirrin' up the gremlins and feeding the mogwai after midnight and such.

Buy a trans from the bone yard or, if you plan to keep the truck for a long time yet, a reman unit, and fix it right.
