Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what my best options are for a transmission swap. I have a 2wd 92 ranger 4.0 manual now with a 3:73 diff and I would like to swap another manual transmission in. Some differences that I would like are a taller 5th gear than the one I have now, and differently spaced gears. Any help would be appreciated.

Another question I have is how to eliminate the governor. My truck originally had
3:08 gears before I swapped an explorer axle in with 3:73's, and now the top speed of my truck with the 235/75's I have is only about 85 since my truck thinks it is going faster. Is there an easy way to fix this?

My 94 4x4 had a top speed of 141, GPS speedo. There is no limiter, only limiter is horsepower. 4.0 5spd 3.27 31".

To get you closer to what you want. Put the guts from a 4cyl transmission into yours, and put 3.55s in the rear.

Thank you for the reply. I wish horsepower was the only limit on my truck, but it cuts out whenever I bury the speedo, Which is about 3500 rpms in 5th. What is different in the 4cyl tranny?

Lower gears 1st 2nd and 3rd. They'd help get your acceleration back with a steeper gear out back.

You might look into the Jet chip, see if has speed limiter provisions. Maybe your has one but neither my 94 or 93 ECUs have a limiter.

I have great acceleration, my problem is when I get on the highway and can only drive 65. My first gear is too low and my 4th and 5th gears are too close together. I could handle 6 gears no problem if I had them. My ideal transmission would be a taller 1st gear than mine now and a taller 5th and have the other gears the same.

I'm pretty sure the governor is programmed and can't be changed until I get a tune, but I was wondering if I could change out the sensor that tells my truck I am going a certain speed with 3:08 gears and instead make it understand that I have 3:73's.

After looking at the T-5's in 5.0 mustangs the 94-95 gear ratios seem to be what I want. They would be 3.35 1.99 1.33 1.00 0.68. I have 3.40 2.05 1.31 1.00 0.79 now, so the mustang tranny would give me a taller 1st and 5th gears is this correct? Would those tranny's easily fit?
